Gintama is a hugely popular anime and manga series, and fans are always excited for new content, even long after the original release. It’s known for its unique mix of a compelling story, silly humor, and characters you can’t help but love. As a parody, Gintama cleverly pays tribute to classic Shonen anime, making it especially enjoyable for longtime fans. At Jump Festa 2026, the creators shared updates on the upcoming remake of the film, Gintama: Yoshiwara in Flames. The remake was first announced in August, and a new trailer and key visual were revealed at the event.
Shueisha’s recent two-day convention, a major annual anime and manga event, featured several popular Shonen series from their magazines. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Gintama anime, a film adaptation of the beloved “Yoshiwara in Flames” arc is coming soon. A new trailer showcases the updated animation and has fans excited for an action-packed movie. The film will be released in Japan on February 13, 2026, and while a U.S. release date hasn’t been announced yet, updates are expected shortly after the Japanese premiere.
What Is Ginatama: Yoshiwara in Flames About?

The anime previously covered this story in episodes 139-146, featuring some of the most exciting moments and battles in the series. Episode 147 continued the story. The new movie will retell the same story, but with improved animation and the original voice cast. The plot takes Gintoki and his friends to Yoshiwara, a hidden district known for its strict rules and where the women working there face constant hardship.
A young boy named Seita tries to rob Gintoki, but discovers Gintoki has no money – and Seita’s own wallet is gone! He confesses he needs the money to find the woman he believes is his mother, and Gintoki and his friends decide to help. However, their good deed quickly attracts unwanted attention from Tsukuyo, the powerful leader of Yoshiwara’s Hyakka. Things go from bad to worse when Kagura’s brother, Kamui, unexpectedly shows up, escalating the danger.
He’s a key villain in this story arc, teaming up with those controlling the Yoshiwara district to gain more power. As Gintoki battles against the corruption in the red-light district, we learn more about Seita’s ties to Yoshiwara. You can currently watch the anime, including the ‘Yoshiwara in Flames’ arc, on Crunchyroll and Hulu.
