Glen Powell Brings UPS Driver to SNL 4 Years After Canceled Host Stint

Glen Powell’s Saturday Night Live hosting debut was years in the making.

On the November 15th episode of NBC’s sketch comedy show, Tom Cruise shared that he was originally meant to host in 2021 to promote Top Gun: Maverick. But when the movie’s release date shifted to May 2022, those plans changed.

Let me tell you, getting a spot on Saturday Night Live is tough enough, but things got really complicated with the pandemic. I was all set to join the cast, but then the release of Top Gun was pushed back due to COVID. That threw everything off. Lorne Michaels himself called me – and I quote – saying that without Top Gun creating buzz, ‘no one will know who the F you are.’ It was a harsh reality check, but that’s how things work in this business – timing is everything!

Okay, so here’s a funny story! I heard about this actor, Glen, who got a little ahead of himself when he thought he’d landed a new job. He was SO excited, he actually told the UPS delivery driver right after getting the offer! He was celebrating so much, they even took a family selfie with the driver to commemorate the occasion… before things unfortunately fell through. It just goes to show, sometimes it’s best to wait for everything to be official before you start celebrating!

He explained that a UPS driver had been claiming Glen Powell wasn’t telling the truth for the past four years. Now, hosting the event, he felt fantastic, especially because it was a chance to show that UPS driver he wasn’t mistaken.

Glen actually invited delivery worker Mitch to New York City. This happened after his sisters found him, completing a heartwarming journey when they took another picture with him on stage at Studio 8H.

Glen said it felt like a lifetime – plus four years – to finally be where he was. He added that he’d learned the best things take time, and UPS certainly understands that better than anyone.

Although it took Glen a while to finally host Saturday Night Live, he had appeared on the show before in 2024. At that time, his Anyone But You co-star, Sydney Sweeney, playfully joked about the rumors of their romantic relationship while hosting the episode.

But instead, cameras turned to Glen, who sat smiling in the studio audience.

“That’s not my fiancé,” Sydney continued. “He’s in my dressing room!”

Alec Baldwin has hosted Saturday Night Live 17 times, and he’s become almost synonymous with the show – perhaps even more so than some of the regular cast members. Over the years, he’s given fans countless memorable moments, from iconic sketches like ‘Canteen Boy’ and ‘Schweddy Balls’ to his spot-on impressions of celebrities like Tony Bennett and, famously, Donald Trump.
