Glen Powell is currently experiencing high popularity in Hollywood, with an array of prominent roles boosting his reputation as a leading actor. Notable appearances include the thrilling action film “Top Gun: Maverick”, romantic comedy “Anyone But You”, and the critically praised movie “Hit Man”, which he co-wrote. He recently starred in the hit sequel “Twisters” and will soon be seen in the much-anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, “The Running Man”. Despite his extensive list of accomplishments, Powell attributes a significant turning point in his career to a Marvel Studios film he wasn’t involved with – specifically Chris Pratt’s performance in “Guardians of the Galaxy“, which he believes changed Hollywood’s expectations of a leading man, paving the way for actors who don’t conform to traditional stereotypes.
In an interview with GQ Magazine, Powell recalled his early years in Hollywood where he was often typecast as a jock, fraternity guy, or typical suburban neighbor. He felt that he was constantly being pigeonholed into very stereotypical roles. However, everything shifted in 2014 when he landed a minor role in The Expendables 3 and James Gunn released Guardians of the Galaxy in cinemas.
Powell shared that it was around the time when Chris Pratt made his mark in “Guardians of the Galaxy” that he particularly noticed. He mentioned how Pratt’s lighthearted and less brooding approach, contrasting actors like Christian Bale and Robert Pattinson, resonated with him more. Pratt’s comedic and energetic performances, according to Powell, are closer to his comfort zone. Moreover, Powell felt that he possessed a quality that is desirable in Hollywood and one that not many other actors can pull off effectively.
The release of Guardians of the Galaxy marked a pivotal moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s journey. This movie, focusing on a band of space outlaws, proved to be both a critical and financial triumph, earning acclaim for its wit, music, and high-energy action scenes. It showed that audiences craved superhero adventures with a lighter touch and less restraint, thus reshaping the genre by introducing more playful and humorous elements instead of sticking solely to the darker, grittier tones that had been prevalent until then. Furthermore, this film catapulted its lead actor, Chris Pratt (Powell), into a successful acting career, eventually leading him to star in The Running Man.
The Running Man Remakes a Classic Arnold Schwarzenegger Movie
The upcoming film version of “The Running Man,” directed by Edgar Wright, is expected to offer a distinctly contrasting experience compared to the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. Instead of being a carbon copy of its predecessor, it aims to be truer to Stephen King’s original 1982 novel, published under the pen name Richard Bachman. In this new version, actor Powell will portray Ben Richards, a character struggling in a bleak future where he enters a lethal television game show out of necessity to pay for his ailing daughter’s medication. This narrative seems to closely follow the source material, implying a darker and more character-focused storyline compared to earlier adaptations.
The 1987 movie “The Running Man,” helmed by Paul Michael Glaser, embodied the essence of ’80s action films. It adapted Stephen King’s somber story into a platform for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s larger-than-life character, featuring Richard as a police officer wrongfully convicted. The film gained notoriety for its biting critique of American consumer culture, boasting a vibrant ensemble of costumed assassins called “Stalkers,” and iconic one-liners. Although it drew upon themes from the book, the movie primarily emphasized high-octane action and visual flair, culminating in an uplifting finale that contrasts starkly with the novel’s notoriously grim ending.
The Running Man is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 14, 2025.
