It’s been two years since the third season of Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso finished, and even though a fourth season is coming, fans have been eager for a new, uplifting sports comedy. In February 2024, Hulu announced a new series that looked promising, starring Twisters and The Running Man actor Glen Powell and written by Loki’s Michael Waldron. Now, the series is finally here, with the first two episodes available to stream.
Premiering on Tuesday, September 30th, Chad Powers is inspired by a character Eli Manning developed for the ESPN show Eli’s Places. The series features Powell as Russ Holliday, a boastful and self-centered college football quarterback whose career fell apart after a humiliating incident during a championship game. Hoping for a fresh start, he goes undercover as “Chad Powers” to try out as a walk-on for a college football team. The cast also includes Steve Zahn, Toby Huss, Perry Mattfeld, Wynne Everett, Frankie A. Rodriguez, and others.
As a huge fan of this show, I’m excited to tell you it has six episodes total. The first two are already up on Hulu, which is awesome! Then, new episodes will drop every Tuesday. I also learned that Powell actually co-wrote the first episode with Waldron, and Eli and Peyton Manning are involved as executive producers – pretty cool, right?
Chad Powers Is Perfect For Fans Missing Ted Lasso
Beyond just being a funny sports show, Chad Powers is a great option for viewers who are eagerly awaiting the fourth season of Ted Lasso. From the Chad Powers trailers, it’s clear the series will deliver the same kind of humor, but also include some dramatic moments. The main character, Russ, is trying to turn things around after some big errors in judgment. While pretending to be someone else isn’t the ideal solution, the possibility that Russ will learn this throughout the show makes for a compelling story.
What really makes Chad Powers different from Ted Lasso is the possibility of a complicated path to recovery for Powell’s character. This new series feels less about the team’s overall progress and more like a story centered on Russ’ personal journey. The humor-and the tension-are also heightened by the fact that Powell physically transforms himself using prosthetics.
