I still think about Agents of SHIELD – it’s been five years since the final season, and it really was the longest-running Marvel TV show! It’s a little frustrating, though, that Marvel Studios hasn’t officially said where it fits into the bigger Marvel story, especially considering it started as a spin-off from the first Avengers movie.
At a recent Agents of SHIELD panel during New York Comic Con, the question of what is considered official Marvel canon came up. Actor Clark Gregg, who played Phil Coulson, had a strong reaction. He bluntly told those focused on canon, “You can go f yourself. We’re proud of what we created and deeply appreciate the connection we have with our fans.”
Gregg had a consistent presence in the early Marvel Cinematic Universe, appearing throughout Phase 1 and helping to establish the organization SHIELD before The Avengers. Although his character died in the films at the hands of Loki, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series revived him and made him a central figure, coinciding with the launch of Marvel Television.
During its run, Agents of SHIELD connected to several Marvel movies, even laying the groundwork for Avengers: Age of Ultron. Clark Gregg reprised his role as Coulson in 2019’s Captain Marvel, portraying a younger version of the character set in 1995.
Now that the Marvel-Netflix series are officially part of the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the status of Agents of SHIELD is less clear. Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige previously indicated the show was connected to the MCU timeline while it was still on ABC. Meanwhile, other Marvel series like Cloak & Dagger and Runaways haven’t been officially recognized as part of the MCU yet.
I recently spoke with Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel Television, and he gave me some interesting insight into where things are headed. He told me they’re actively working to better integrate the older ABC Marvel shows into the main storyline, or canon, of the MCU. He seemed genuinely excited by the challenge, saying it’s exactly the kind of puzzle he enjoys solving – figuring out how those earlier stories fit into everything we’re seeing now. It sounds like Marvel is taking steps to ensure a more cohesive universe, and I’m definitely intrigued to see how they pull it off.
I was at DragonCon this year, and Chloe Bennet – you know, Daisy Johnson/Quake from Agents of SHIELD – was talking about the show’s future. She seems really confident that Agents of SHIELD will be back somehow, eventually. She also playfully threw some shade at one of the less popular Marvel Disney+ series, especially since there were rumors she might have been involved with it!
I’m being completely serious – this isn’t a prank. I honestly have no inside information; nobody from the show has told me anything. And you know me, if they did, I’d definitely spill the beans! As far as the show continuing, it’s not currently considered official canon. I think it might resurface somehow – maybe on a different streaming service – but right now, that’s not happening. I agree it would have made sense for me to be in ‘Secret Invasion,’ but I wasn’t involved. It probably would have been a better move, honestly.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe planning a fresh start after the events of Phase 6, characters from Agents of SHIELD could reappear either before or after Avengers: Secret Wars.
