The popular video game series, God of War, is expanding into a new TV show coming to Amazon Prime Video in late 2027. The series will retell the story of Kratos, a powerful Spartan warrior, and his son, Atreus. Leading the project is showrunner Ronald D. Moore, known for his successful work on shows like Star Trek and the reimagined Battlestar Galactica. Although Moore isn’t a video game player himself, his strong history with television series is reassuring fans that the adaptation will be in good hands.
David Jaffe, the creator of the God of War video games, didn’t hesitate to share his blunt reaction to the first revealed image of Kratos and Atreus. On his YouTube channel, he jokingly criticized the photo, saying it looked like Kratos was relieving himself in the woods. He quickly clarified that he has a lot of respect for the development team, but simply didn’t like the chosen image.
Everyone is clearly working hard, but honestly, this just isn’t working. Let’s be clear: something can be poorly executed, and this image definitely is – it’s bad in a lot of ways, and we’ll get into specifics shortly. Despite that, Ron Moore, the showrunner, is incredibly talented – a real force in the industry. I actually believe the show will be good overall. However, this particular image of Kratos, with that expression, just looks silly. If this is how you’re introducing a brand-new character you’re hoping will carry the series, especially for people who haven’t seen them before, is this really the best approach?

The choice of Ryan Hurst to play Kratos has already disappointed some fans, and the show can’t afford much more backlash. Although Hurst voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök and was even nominated for a BAFTA award for it, many fans had hoped Christopher Judge, who originally voiced Kratos in the game, would take on the live-action role.
It’s still too early to judge the new series, as even Jaffe acknowledges that one picture doesn’t represent the overall quality, particularly before anyone has seen it. There’s still reason to be optimistic, especially considering it comes from the studio behind the hugely popular Fallout franchise.
