God of War fans “feel cheated” as new game makes you work for a major feature

The initial announcement of God of War: Sons of Sparta was met with excitement and positive feelings towards Sony, Santa Monica Studios, and Mega Cat Studios. However, player reactions quickly turned negative once the game was released, as many fans felt misled by a surprising discovery within the game itself.

Okay, I’m so hyped for the God of War TV show! The people making it just announced who’s going to play Atreus, Kratos, and even Odin and Thor – all the big characters! It’s getting real, and I can’t wait to see how they bring this world to life.

It’s disappointing to see the enthusiasm for the God of War series dampened, especially considering the recent announcements of both the God of War Trilogy remake and Sons of Sparta, which now serves as the first game in the series’ timeline.

Players are upset because the co-op mode in God of War: Sons of Sparta, where you can play with Kratos and his brother Deimos, doesn’t unlock until you’ve finished the entire single-player story.

As Push Square pointed out, it used to be typical for games to offer bonus content after you finished them. However, that’s mostly been replaced by New Game Plus features, which change how the game is played. Plus, many games now include features like co-op right from the start.

Following some misunderstanding among fans, Santa Monica Studio issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) to clarify the situation.

For many players, the addition of the co-op mode came too late, and they felt disappointed that it wasn’t available from the start.

The official trailer didn’t mention a two-player co-op mode, but fans noticed the PlayStation Store listing said the game would have “Single Player or 2 Player Couch Co-Op.” This led to a lot of discussion online about what that co-op mode would be like.

Even though the main story can’t be played with a friend, it makes sense that people would like to team up for the challenge mode without needing to finish the story first.

There are a lot of exciting games coming out in 2026 and beyond, and players don’t have unlimited time to play them all. Plus, completing a single game takes a significant amount of time – most players report spending between 8 and 12 hours to finish it, and even longer if they aim for full completion.

Playing God of War: Sons of Sparta takes a significant amount of time. If you were planning to play with a friend, it might be best to wait and see if the developers release an update before starting on your own.
