God of War Laufey Not Directed by Cory Barlog, Who’s Focused on the Franchise’s Long-Term Vision

Following the announcement of God of War Laufey, Santa Monica Studio explained why Cory Barlog isn’t directing the game. The studio clarified that Barlog remains Head of Creative, meaning he now focuses on the overall future of the God of War series and works with directors like Ariel Lawrence, rather than directing games himself.

Santa Monica Studio announced on social media that Cory is their Head of Creative. In this role, he collaborates with game directors such as Ariel Lawrence and helps shape the future direction of all games in the series.

The last game directed solely by Barlog was God of War in 2018. While he was involved with the 2022 sequel, God of War Ragnarök, he shared directing duties with Eric Williams. Most recently, Barlog served as a producer and creative director on the studio’s latest release.

Back in July 2025, rumors suggested Santa Monica Studio was developing a new game under the direction of Barlog. It’s unclear if that original project is the same as the recently announced God of War Laufey, or if Barlog was always intended to lead the new title. The initial reports also didn’t specify whether this game would be the next main God of War installment or the Metroidvania spin-off that later became God of War Sons of Sparta.

The game God of War Laufey was announced with a detailed trailer showing a cinematic opening that led into a boss fight gameplay demonstration. This new title is a spin-off focusing on the story of Faye, Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother. The game begins shortly after her death, the event that starts the plot of the 2018 God of War game.

The story begins with Faye—also known as Laufey—waking up in an unfamiliar world. She soon discovers that her efforts to keep Kratos and Atreus safe are threatened, prompting her to embark on a new adventure. Santa Monica Studio explained in a PlayStation Blog post that they wanted to translate Faye’s established strength and skill from the stories of God of War and Ragnarök into a powerful and effective gameplay experience.

A key new feature in God of War Laufey is its setting, called the Everywhen, which will draw on mythologies from all over the world. Described as the origin and final destination of all magic, the Everywhen will offer players a wide variety of both enemies and allies.

God of War Laufey doesn’t yet have a release date.
