The June 2026 PlayStation State of Play concluded with an impressive 23-minute gameplay reveal of God of War Laufey. While the presentation ended with the game simply listed as “in development,” leading some to believe its release was still a long way off, there’s now a possibility fans won’t have to wait as long as initially feared to play the new God of War title.
Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier recently discussed the game Laufey‘s unclear release date on social media. While there’s no firm date yet, he advised fans not to worry, suggesting it’s not far off. He specifically denied a 2028 release. Based on his comments, it seems PlayStation is aiming for a 2027 launch, though game development is unpredictable and plans can change, so nothing is official.
Jason Schreier, who covers the gaming industry, has shared information about an upcoming game, though he’s been careful not to reveal too much. He mentioned in July that Santa Monica Studio’s next project wasn’t a completely new game idea, but could feel like one – and recent announcements at the State of Play event seem to confirm this, adding credibility to his earlier estimate of a release timeframe.
God of War Laufey Is “Coming Soon”

Other promotional materials for Laufey support Schreier’s report, simply stating the game is “coming soon.” It’s a mystery why PlayStation isn’t announcing a more precise release timeframe, particularly if it’s not far away. However, it’s almost certain Laufey won’t be released in 2026, as Marvel’s Wolverine – now with a confirmed release date – is PlayStation’s main first-party game for the holiday season.
It’s also worth noting that this game doesn’t have a specific release timeframe, unlike all the other games shown at the State of Play event. Even other PlayStation-developed games, like Until Dawn 2, were given at least a year for when they’ll be released – though its window was simply ‘2027’.
Cory Barlog, the creative head at Santa Monica Studio and formerly the creative director for God of War, has announced that more details about Laufey will be revealed in the months leading up to the game’s release.
Concerns about how far off the release of Laufey might be are fueled by the trend of video games being announced years before they actually come out. This is especially common with big-budget (AAA) titles, and it’s been getting worse due to more powerful technology, demanding company leaders, and economic challenges. A good example is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, the next game from the creators of The Last of Us. It was revealed in December 2024, but there haven’t been many updates since. According to one report, it might not be released until 2027, or even skip the PlayStation 5 entirely. Even a 2027 release would mean a three-year wait from the announcement and a seven-year gap since the developer’s last original game, The Last of Us Part 2.
