At the PlayStation State of Play in June 2026, Santa Monica Studio revealed a first look at their new game, God of War Laufey. Here’s everything we know, including possible release dates and what you can expect from the game.
The State of Play presentation also featured a new glimpse of Wolverine, the upcoming PlayStation exclusive from Insomniac Games. It appears to be quite different from their Spider-Man games. PlayStation fans have a lot to look forward to, with several major games on the way and fresh titles added to PS Plus.

When is the God of War Laufey release date?
There is currently no announced release date for God of War Laufey.
There’s still no confirmed release date for the new God of War game. While the gameplay shown during the PlayStation State of Play looked polished, it was likely just a small, focused segment, meaning the full game still needs more development before it’s finished.
Honestly, everyone’s a little nervous about Grand Theft Auto 6 coming out. It’s such a massive game, and its release date feels like it’s casting a shadow over everything else. Any developer planning a launch in the next year or so is definitely feeling the pressure!
Santa Monica Studio will likely avoid releasing their next God of War game around the same time as GTA 6. Considering the previous God of War game came out in April 2018, many are predicting the new game, currently referred to as God of War Laufey, could be released in April 2027.
Keep in mind this isn’t confirmed yet! We’ll let you know immediately when we have an official release date.
Can I pre-order God of War Laufey?
No, you cannot currently pre-order God of War Laufey.
You can add God of War Laufey to your PlayStation Store wishlist to receive updates on pre-order availability.
It’s still unclear what special editions of God of War Laufey will be available, but based on the previous game, God of War Ragnarok, we can expect some impressive Deluxe and Collector’s editions. These will likely include various extra items and collectibles.

Which consoles and platforms can play God of War Laufey?
God of War Laufey has only been announced for PlayStation 5.
Similar to God of War Ragnarok, this game won’t be released on PS4 and will only be available on current-generation consoles.
Sony recently announced it’s shifting away from releasing its single-player games on PC, which probably means God of War Laufey will stay exclusive to PlayStation for the time being.
Since the game is being released late in the PlayStation 5’s lifespan, it will likely also be available on the PlayStation 6, potentially with improved features like ray tracing and higher frame rates and resolutions.
God of War Laufey gameplay and story details
God of War Laufey takes place at the same time as God of War (2018), and tells the story of Faye’s experiences in the afterlife following her death and Kratos’s burial of her.

According to the official game description, Faye wakes up in an unfamiliar world after she dies, and finds that the precautions she took to keep Kratos and Atreus safe are now in danger.
Okay, so just like with Kratos, Faye doesn’t get a moment to breathe! She has to battle her way through this crazy afterlife called the Everywhen to protect the people she cares about. It’s a place where all sorts of powerful, and seriously mean, gods from different myths are fighting for control, and magic is everywhere – and it’s dangerous!
We’ve explored Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of war, fire, disease, and healing, and also Begtse, a Buddhist deity associated with warfare.
Faye returns, once again played by Deborah Ann Woll, and she’s not alone this time. She’s joined by Phranque, a cube-shaped companion voiced by Jack Quaid, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon brought to life by Perlina Lau.
As a long-time God of War fan, I’m really excited to see that the gameplay in Laufey seems to be going back to the roots of the series! From what I’ve seen, it’s a lot more fast-paced and action-packed, like the original games. And finally, we can jump again! It’s been way too long since we’ve been able to do that in a God of War game.

The detailed scene, revealed during the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play, depicts Kratos and Atreus laying Laufey to rest as she begins her journey to the afterlife. Everything appears peaceful until she is attacked by creatures from Everywhen – specifically, Begtse and Sekhmet.
After that, things quickly worsen: Faye is imprisoned, and Kratos and Atreus mistakenly believe she has peacefully passed away, which is heartbreaking.
The trailer showcases a significant change in combat from the previous games, with a greater emphasis on verticality and a much faster, more action-packed pace.
