Amazon has revealed that Ryan Hurst will play the main character, Kratos, in its upcoming live-action series based on the popular God of War video games. The announcement was made on social media with a picture of Hurst next to an older version of Kratos as he appears in the 2018 and 2022 God of War games. Santa Monica Studio, the team behind the God of War series, shared their excitement about the casting, pointing out that Hurst will be following in the footsteps of previous Kratos voice actors T.C. Carson (from the PlayStation 2 and 3 games) and Christopher Judge (from the newer installments).
Santa Monica Studio announced that Ryan Hurst will be playing Kratos in the new live-action God of War series. They expressed excitement about his portrayal of the character, noting he’ll be joining T.C. Carson and Christopher Judge, both of whom have famously brought Kratos to life in memorable ways.
Fans of the God of War series will likely recognize Ray Hurst, who recently played Thor in God of War Ragnarök and even received a BAFTA nomination for the performance. He’s also known for his roles as Gerry Bertier in Remember the Titans and Opie Winston in Sons of Anarchy. The upcoming God of War series on Prime Video is a production of Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.
The making of the God of War show has had its challenges, leading to a fresh start in October 2024. At the same time, Robert D. Moore—known for his work on shows like Outlander, For All Mankind, and the Battlestar Galactica remake—joined the team as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Recent reports also indicate that Frederick E.O. Toye, who has directed episodes of The Boys and Shogun, will direct the first two episodes. Filming is currently happening in Vancouver.
I’m really excited about this live-action series, but it’s still too early to tell if it’s going to be great. What’s really cool, though, is that Amazon seems to have a lot of faith in it – they’ve already given the green light for a second season, and the first one isn’t even finished yet! I read that showrunner Moore confirmed this back in March 2025, which is a fantastic sign.
I’m currently adapting the video game God of War into a TV series for Amazon. They’ve ordered two seasons, and I’m now working as a writer in the show’s writers’ room. That’s what I’m focused on right now, as for my future plans.”
Although details are still limited, Amazon has confirmed its God of War series will follow the story of the 2018 game. Kratos and his son, Atreus, will embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Like the game, the show will likely focus on themes of fatherhood, with Kratos determined to raise Atreus differently than the gods and monsters he battled in his past.
