Following the news about a remake of the original God of War games and the release of God of War: Sons of Sparta, rumors have been circulating about a new God of War project. Recent discoveries within game files suggest this new installment could heavily feature the mythology of Ancient Egypt.
Fans on the God of War Ragnarök subreddit have found unplayable cutscenes hidden within the game’s data. One user, TheMorse_, pointed out that this is reminiscent of a similar hidden cutscene in the 2018 God of War game, which essentially acted as a prologue to the story of Ragnarök.
New cutscenes appear to feature conversations between powerful, otherworldly beings about Odin and Atreus. Athena is among those present. Another scene shows Atreus journeying to meet creatures from different mythologies, accompanied by a unique character named “Mau.” Mau can only say their own name, similar to the character Groot from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Interestingly, Atreus, like Rocket Raccoon, seems to be able to understand Mau. It’s worth noting that “Mau” is the ancient Egyptian word for cat and was often considered a form of the Sun God, Ra.
I was reading about a newly discovered bit of dialogue from a cutscene with Athena, and it’s got me thinking! She says things like, “One failed us. One rejected us,” and “We have a problem.” It’s not totally clear who she means, but considering everything that happened in God of War Ragnarök, a lot of fans think she’s talking about Odin being the one who failed them, and maybe Atreus was the one who rejected them. It’s all just speculation right now, but it’s really interesting to think about!
These claims started as rumors about early cutscenes that were cut from the final game as the story evolved. However, as TheMorse_ noted, these scenes bear a strong resemblance to hidden cutscenes discovered in the 2018 God of War. Those files showed Atreus killing a bear—a scene that happens early in Ragnarök—and secretly visiting shrines, eventually learning that Tyr is still alive.
According to industry insider shinobi602, the next God of War game is being led by Cory Barlog and is currently expected to release around 2028. The title is likely to be announced around May during a State of Play event, or possibly at the Summer Game Fest. If neither of those happen, the release date may have been delayed, or the announcement could be smaller in scope.
Rumors surfaced in September suggesting the next God of War game might take Kratos to Egypt. Gaming journalist Tom Henderson initially reported Kratos could be equipped with a curved sword reminiscent of those seen in the Prince of Persia series. He’s since clarified that the game will also feature a scythe as one of Kratos’ weapons.
