Following the news about a remake of the original God of War games and the release of God of War: Sons of Sparta, rumors have been circulating about a new God of War project. Recent discoveries within the game’s code suggest this new game could heavily feature the mythology of Ancient Egypt.
Fans on the God of War Ragnarök subreddit have found unplayable cutscenes hidden within the game’s code. One user, TheMorse_, pointed out that this is reminiscent of a similar hidden cutscene in the 2018 God of War game, which essentially acted as a prologue to the story of Ragnarök.
Recent cutscenes appear to feature conversations between powerful, otherworldly beings about Odin and Atreus. Athena is among those present. Another scene shows Atreus journeying to meet creatures from different mythologies, accompanied by a character named “Mau.” Mau is described as being similar to Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy – they can only say their own name. Interestingly, Atreus, like Rocket Raccoon, seems to be able to understand Mau. It’s also worth noting that “Mau” is an Egyptian word for cat and is often associated with Ra, the Sun God.
New dialogue from a cutscene featuring Athena has surfaced, revealing lines like, “One failed us. One rejected us,” and “We have a problem.” While it’s not yet clear who she’s talking about, based on what happened in God of War Ragnarök, it’s likely she’s referring to Odin as the one who failed them, and Atreus as the one who rejected them.
These claims started as rumors about cutscenes that were made for the game but ultimately removed during story revisions. However, as TheMorse_ noted, they strongly resemble hidden cutscenes discovered in the 2018 game God of War. Those cutscenes showed Atreus killing a bear—a scene that also happens early in Ragnarök—and secretly visiting shrines, which eventually led him to learn that Tyr was still alive.
According to industry insider shinobi602, the next God of War game is being led by Cory Barlog and is currently planned to release around 2028. The game’s title is expected to be announced sometime around May, potentially during the State of Play presentation or at the Summer Game Fest. If not revealed by then, the release date might be delayed, or the announcement could be a smaller, more limited event.
Rumors surfaced in September suggesting the next God of War game might take Kratos to Egypt. Gaming insider Tom Henderson initially reported that Kratos would wield a curved sword reminiscent of those seen in the Prince of Persia series. However, he recently clarified that the game will also feature a scythe as one of Kratos’s weapons.
