God of War Reveals a For All Mankind Reunion as Major Game Antagonist Is Confirmed for Prime Video Series

With the cast for the upcoming God of War series on Prime Video taking shape, it became apparent the first season would cover more ground than the original Norse game. The show will include characters from both Norse-era God of War games, even some who don’t appear until God of War Ragnarök. While fans were excited about seeing expanded roles for characters like Odin, Thor, and Sif, many wondered who would play Freya, a crucial character in both games. That question has now been answered.

Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios have confirmed that Sonya Walger will play the character Freya in the upcoming God of War series. She’ll be a recurring cast member. This role reunites Walger with showrunner Ronald D. Moore, as they previously worked together on Apple’s popular sci-fi show For All Mankind, where Walger appeared in 18 episodes between 2019 and 2022.

Freya’s Role in God of War Explained

In the 2018 game God of War, Freya is a key supporting character who joins Kratos and Atreus on their journey. She lives a secluded life in Midgard as the Witch of the Woods, but her past is more complex. She was once married to Odin, in an effort to bring peace between two groups, the Vanir and the Aesir, during a long and devastating war. They had a son named Baldur. After leaving Odin due to an unhappy marriage, he cursed her, trapping her in Midgard. Initially, Freya helps Kratos and Atreus, but their relationship becomes strained as the story progresses, eventually leading to her becoming an antagonist by the time of God of War Ragnarok.

It’s notable that Freya’s part in the TV show is being called a recurring role, meaning she likely won’t be in every episode, especially during the first season. This mirrors her presence in the original game, where she appears during important story beats but is limited by her curse that keeps her confined to Midgard. Since Freya has a larger role in God of War Ragnarok, if the show’s second season adapts that game, it’s reasonable to expect the actress playing her to become a main cast member.

The upcoming Prime Video series based on God of War won’t directly copy the 2018 game, and that opens up exciting possibilities, especially for the character of Freya. The show can expand on her relationships with the Aesir gods, and particularly delve into the complex connection she has with Baldur. The game only showed us this relationship through Kratos’ eyes, but the series can offer a much fuller picture. This allows the creators to build on the original story, creating a compelling parallel to the bond between Kratos and Atreus, and even explore Kratos’ own history in Greece.

The initial image released for the God of War series caused some debate, with some fans wondering if it was created using artificial intelligence. However, there’s still plenty to look forward to with the upcoming show. It’s based on a highly popular and critically praised game known for its excellent story. Plus, the casting choices have been consistently strong – the latest being Walger, who’s expected to deliver a fantastic performance as Freya. Freya is a complex character, dealing with deep sorrow while still striving to help those around her.
