God Of War Series Finds Kratos Star In Franchise Vet

Prime Video has found its Kratos.

The streaming service has cast Ryan Hurst to play the main character in its new series based on the God of War video games. Hurst is already familiar with the franchise, having played Thor in God of War Ragnarök and receiving a BAFTA nomination for his work.

The God of War series includes 10 games and several updated versions, starting with the original released for PlayStation 2 in 2005. The games center around Kratos, a Spartan warrior who battles gods from different mythologies. The early games in the series feature Kratos fighting gods and goddesses from Greek mythology.

The series was revived in 2018, shifting the setting to the world of Norse mythology. This new installment features Kratos alongside his son, Atreus, who plays a key role in the story. The upcoming Prime Video series will continue the story begun in the 2018 game, following Kratos and Atreus as they journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, their beloved wife and mother.

Amazon Prime Video has already committed to two seasons of the show, and initial work on it is now happening. Frederick E.O. Toye, who has worked on shows like Shōgun and The Boys, will direct the first two episodes. The producers are still adding more actors to the cast.

The series God of War centers on Kratos and his son Atreus as they travel to scatter the ashes of a loved one, Faye. Along the way, Kratos attempts to guide Atreus in becoming a worthy god, and Atreus, in turn, tries to help Kratos reconnect with his humanity.

Ronald D. Moore, known for creating shows like For All Mankind, Outlander, and Battlestar Galactica, will be the showrunner, executive producer, and a writer on this new series.

Given its rich story and the talent of someone like Alan Moore involved, the God of War series has a strong chance of being a huge success for Prime Video. Prime Video’s recent Fallout adaptation has been highly praised by critics and viewers alike. If God of War can successfully translate the popular video game into a series, it could establish Prime Video as a leading platform for video game adaptations.

Filming for the God of War series is expected to begin later this year, but it probably won’t be released until at least mid-2027. Because the show will likely have a lot of special effects, the editing and finishing process will take a significant amount of time. The fact that Amazon has already approved two seasons suggests they’re confident the show will be a long-term success, and may help shorten the wait between seasons.
