Amazon is building the team that will create its upcoming video game series based on God of War, bringing on people who worked on the popular shows Shōgun from Hulu and FX. After the success of Fallout on Prime Video, Amazon has approved more video game adaptations, including series based on Horizon Zero Dawn and Mass Effect.
A new God of War series is coming, inspired by the popular action-adventure games that first launched in 2005. The series saw a major transformation with the 2018 God of War game, and continued that evolution with God of War: Ragnarök in 2022. These newer games moved away from the original Greek mythology and settings, embracing Norse mythology and a different style of gameplay.
Amazon’s upcoming God of War series will be based on the popular 2018 game reboot. Ronald D. Moore, known for shows like Battlestar Galactica and Outlander, is leading the project. Recently, director Frederick E.O. Toye – who has directed episodes of acclaimed series The Boys, Fallout, and Emmy-winning Shōgun – joined the team. Toye will direct the first two episodes of the God of War adaptation for Prime Video, working with Moore to establish the show’s visual style. Amazon has already approved the series for two seasons, hoping to create another successful show for gamers.

Viewers excited about the live-action God of War series were pleased to learn that Moore would be leading the project, given his strong track record in storytelling and character development. Earlier this year, the showrunner raised some eyebrows when he admitted he doesn’t play video games. However, Moore did make an effort to familiarize himself with the God of War games, mentioning he’s more comfortable with older game titles, saying:
I gave gaming a try, but it’s just not for me. I grew up playing classic arcade games like Defender and Asteroids, which I can still manage. However, I struggle with modern controllers. My kids and even my wife pick it up easily, but I just can’t seem to get the hang of it.
During his appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, Moore addressed fan worries about the upcoming show. He explained what makes the God of War story so compelling – particularly the powerful bond between Kratos and his son, which drives the emotional core of the narrative. As the showrunner of Battlestar Galactica, Moore aims to create an adaptation that stays true to the games while also expanding the world with rich characters and immersive experiences.
The show aims to capture the same feeling as the game: an expansive adventure and a touching story about a father and son honoring a lost mother. It’s emotionally resonant, but also explores Kratos’ complex history and inner struggles, adding depth and weight to the narrative. Despite the serious themes, the show remains engaging and features plenty of action and a richly detailed world.
Following recent announcements about Amazon’s plans for God of War, fans can anticipate a live-action adaptation of the story from the 2018 game, starring Kratos. While the specifics are still unknown, the show aims to blend intense action, compelling emotional moments, and rich mythology into a believable and engaging series. The creators, Moore and Toye, have expressed confidence in the show’s potential. Currently, God of War doesn’t have a confirmed release date, but filming is scheduled to begin in early 2026, with a likely premiere sometime in 2027.
