The long-awaited 2D God of War spin-off, Sons of Sparta, was unexpectedly released during the recent State of Play and is now available on PS5 for $29.99. Some players were initially confused to see it listed with co-op support, as the game is actually a single-player experience. Sony Santa Monica has explained that the co-op feature is part of an unlockable challenge mode, which becomes available after completing the main story.
Once you finish the main story in Sons of Sparta, you’ll gain access to a challenge mode. You can play this mode by yourself, or with a friend locally in a two-player co-op experience.
Although it’s a welcome and unexpected feature, some players are puzzled why you need to finish the story to unlock it. Many are also surprised there’s no online co-op, but it’s possible adding that feature would have been too demanding for a project made by a small, dedicated team.
Despite initial reports suggesting a 2.5D Metroidvania style, God of War: Sons of Sparta is actually a classic side-scrolling action game. It follows a young Kratos as he trains with his brother Deimos under the harsh Spartan military. Developed by Mega Cat Studios, the team behind Five Nights at Freddy’s: Into the Pit, the game features new enemies inspired by Greek mythology, and players will battle using a spear, shield, and various ancient artifacts.
Fans hoping for a return to the classic style of God of War might be waiting a while. Sony Santa Monica has revealed they’re also creating a remake of the original God of War Trilogy, but it’s currently in the very early stages of development, and they’ll share more details later.
