Based on recent updates, Sony Santa Monica’s upcoming game seems to be progressing smoothly and is anticipated to be a significant release. Moreover, according to Jason Schrier from Bloomberg, this new project appears to be a revamp of an existing franchise, similar to the fresh take seen in the latest God of War series.
In a recent post on ResetEra, I excitedly shared that it’s not a new God of War game per se, but rather a fresh title from an established franchise. I also hinted at the fact that this upcoming game won’t delve into the realm of science fiction. Instead, it might be a refreshing take on an older intellectual property, making it feel like a completely new IP. To further excite fellow fans, I even drew parallels between this new project and the recent evolution of the God of War series in comparison to its storied past.
Schreier expressed it as follows: though it’s not a completely fresh IP, it may give off that impression. Perhaps this is why there’s some confusion. I kindly ask you not to press me for additional details at the moment – if I provide further information later, it will be in an article, rather than here on the forum.
Similarly in the same article, Schrier expressed his viewpoint that the science fiction concepts (which some have been accepting for quite some time) are baseless.
In the same discussion thread on ResetEra, Schrier had earlier mentioned that the game will be a major upcoming project for Sony Santa Monica Studio, with Cory Barlog leading its development. Barlog himself described the studio’s new venture as his next significant work, stating that when he last discussed it (about a month or two ago), the project was progressing smoothly.
Currently, Sony Santa Monica studio is engaged on a new undertaking. Earlier rumors suggest that another installment of the popular God of War series is also being made. The upcoming title seems to be a 2.5D side-scrolling spin-off, which promises to return us once more to ancient Greece. As per reports, the release date for this game has been delayed and it’s now expected to drop in 2026.
It’s also important to mention that neither Sony nor Sony Santa Monica have yet announced any official updates about their studio’s future. However, with Schrier’s recent remarks, it seems plausible that the metroidvania-style God of War game may be in development by a completely different studio altogether.
In June, it was suggested that Sony might be on the verge of unveiling their Metroidvania spin-off game, as per Jeff Grubb and Tim Henderson’s reports. They hinted at a possible announcement happening quite soon.
The standalone version of God of War is anticipated to delve into Kratos’ past, set during his time in Greece. Akin to Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, this game is expected to present a new perspective on a series known for third-person combat and light RPG elements.
For now, take a look at the insights shared by Bear McCreary, the composer behind both “God of War” and “God of War Ragnarok.
