Amazon is casting actors for its upcoming live-action God of War TV series, and it seems the show will initially focus on characters from the second game, God of War Ragnarok. While Ryan Hurst will play Kratos, other announced cast members – Teresa Palmer as Sif and Max Parker as Heimdall – are also from Ragnarok. Fans are eager to learn who will portray Atreus, Mimir, and Freya, and now another important character from Ragnarok has been confirmed to join the cast.
Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, known for his role in Severance, will play the character of Thor in the God of War series, as reported by Deadline. In the games’ lore, Thor is Odin’s son and acts as his powerful right-hand man. He briefly appeared at the end of the 2018 God of War game and played a larger role as a villain in Ragnarok.
What Thor’s Role In God of War Season 1 Could Be

As a huge fan of God of War, I’m really excited about the potential for Thor in the upcoming show. Even though he only had a brief appearance in the game, I think they can really build on that and give him a significant role in season one. Remember his sons, Magni and Modi, from the first game? They were sent by Odin to hunt down Kratos and Atreus. If they cast Thor now, we could finally see his relationship with his sons explored – something we never really got to see in the game, including how he’d react to everything that happened with them. It’s a fantastic opportunity to add even more depth to the already amazing story the games told.
Adapting a popular story like God of War always involves risks. Fans have strong expectations and might not appreciate changes to the original. However, some alterations are necessary when turning a video game into a TV show. Games offer a unique experience – players directly control the characters, which is hard to capture on screen. With a large story like God of War, it’s important to show different viewpoints and the wider world. That’s why the show will feature characters like Thor and other Norse gods in its first season, allowing it to explore the full scope of the story.
If you only know Thor from the Marvel movies, you might be surprised by how he’s depicted in God of War. This version of Thor is a complex and compelling character. While many see him as a fearsome enemy, he’s actually a tragic figure – manipulated by Odin and used as a weapon to conquer worlds. The God of War games give Thor real depth, showing him as both powerful and arrogant, but also burdened by guilt and regret. If the first season of the show includes scenes with Thor and his sons, Magni and Modi, it will likely make his character even more impactful. Ultimately, what happens in Season 1 could set the stage for an even more important and emotional role for Thor in Season 2.
Ólafsson faces a significant challenge in his new role. He’ll be acting alongside Christopher Hurst, who was nominated for a BAFTA award for his performance as Thor in the video game God of War Ragnarok. It seems like a daunting task, but Ólafsson is well-equipped to handle it. He has the charisma and skill to make the character his own while still respecting Hurst’s previous work. If Amazon’s version of Thor is as strong as the game, Ólafsson could become an awards contender.
