Games like Diablo and Dark Souls have inspired many copies, but it’s rare to find one that successfully blends elements of both. No Rest for the Wicked is an option if you’re willing to buy a game that’s still in development. Otherwise, there’s another promising game on the horizon that’s easier to get into.
Coming in 2026, Gods, Death & Reapers is an action game that takes inspiration from Diablo while mixing in elements from different genres. It features gameplay similar to extraction shooter games and offers single-player, co-op, and player-versus-environment modes. If you’re interested, you can request access to playtest the game on its Steam page and potentially participate in free alpha testing.
Gods, Death & Reapers Playtest Requests Are Open
No Harm In Signing Up
The next playtest for Gods, Death & Reapers will likely take a while. The last phase of testing, Closed Alpha 4, just finished on November 26th. Considering how long previous tests took, we don’t expect Closed Alpha 5 to be ready until 2026.
WOLCEN Studio plans to add more playable characters, called Reapers, in upcoming playtests. The game, Gods, Death & Reapers, is scheduled to be fully released sometime in 2026.
There Are Strong Dark Souls Vibes Here
A Promising Atmosphere
While Gods, Death & Reapers doesn’t play much like Dark Souls, its dark fantasy setting feels more inspired by FromSoftware games than by Diablo. The game takes place in a unique afterlife where myths are real, but the gods are gone. Players are tasked with fixing a broken world and bringing everything back into balance. The themes of dead gods, ruined worlds, and a difficult fight to restore order strongly resemble the style of Hidetaka Miyazaki’s games.
While Gods, Death & Reapers has a captivating atmosphere, that doesn’t automatically make it as good as Dark Souls. The developers, WOLCEN Studio, have a history of abandoning games before they’re fully completed – their previous title, Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem, had its multiplayer servers shut down and never reached its full potential. It’s possible the same fate could befall Gods, Death & Reapers, but it’s too soon to say for sure.
Regardless, Gods, Death & Reapers is a game to watch. There aren’t many action RPGs focused on extracting loot, so if you enjoy games like Diablo, Dark Souls, or even ARC Raiders, you might find something special in the next alpha test.
