While AppleTV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will return for a second season in 2026, it’s not the only big Godzilla news. The iconic monster has become incredibly popular again over the last ten years, appearing in films like those in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, Shin Godzilla, and Godzilla Minus One. He’s even made cameos in places like the video game Fortnite.

The world of Godzilla and its monsters is still growing! Legendary’s MonsterVerse has become even bigger with several team-up movies featuring Godzilla and Kong, and now the story is expanding further with season two of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. This new season explores what it’s like for humans as the giant Titans begin to appear on Earth.

Just before the second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters premieres on February 27th, IDW Entertainment revealed an exciting crossover event featuring Godzilla and several well-known characters from video games.

This summer, IDW Publishing is releasing a comic book crossover event featuring Sonic the Hedgehog and Godzilla! The story, written by Nick Marino (who worked on Godzilla Rivals), brings together the iconic worlds of SEGA and Toho, and features art by Jack Lawrence and Reggie Graham, ensuring the characters look just as fans remember. With both Sonic and Godzilla being popular IDW properties, this team-up was bound to happen.

As a huge movie fan, I’m getting really excited about the Sonic and Godzilla crossover! The cover art by artists like Mauro Fonseca and Min Ho Kim has revealed that Knuckles, Amy, and Tails will be joining the action, along with some awesome monsters like MechaGodzilla and Mothra. Plus, writer Nick Marino has let slip that Doctor Eggman will be in it too, and he might even be causing trouble for both Sonic and Godzilla! Apparently, they’re planning to pack the movie with tons of Easter eggs and nods to all the classic Godzilla movies and popular Sonic games, which is a fantastic idea.

Godzilla Adds Another High-Profile Crossover Event To His Long History

The recent IDW comic, Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla, might seem unusual, but Godzilla has a long history of teaming up with characters from other universes. Back in the late 1970s, Godzilla first appeared in the Marvel Universe, and decades later, he convincingly defeated almost every hero and villain Marvel had to offer in Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe. He quickly returned in Godzilla: Infinity Roar. Similarly, Godzilla has battled alongside Kong and other giant monsters in the Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong comics, though he played a somewhat less destructive part in those stories.

In 2022, IDW and Boom! Comics teamed up Godzilla with another beloved franchise in Godzilla vs. The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The story follows the Power Rangers as they pursue Rita Repulsa into Godzilla’s world and battle him using their Dinozords. Then, in 2025, IDW released Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla, where the Foot Clan is established to fight Godzilla, and the Ninja Turtles must prevent Shredder from harnessing the kaiju’s radioactive energy. After crossing over with Sonic the Hedgehog, Godzilla has few major pop culture collaborations left.

Sonic enjoys teaming up with characters from other franchises. He’s appeared in games like Super Smash Bros., and even had a comic book adventure set in the DC Universe. In 2025, DC x Sonic the Hedgehog brought him together with the Justice League to battle Darkseid. Now, alongside his recent encounter with Godzilla, Sonic and his friends are joining forces with the Justice League again in DC x Sonic the Hedgehog: Metal Legion.
