As a longtime Godzilla fan, I was absolutely blown away by Godzilla Minus One when it came out in 2023. Honestly, it exceeded all my expectations, especially considering it was made with a much smaller budget than the American Godzilla movies. It quickly became a global hit – critics and fans alike loved it, and a lot of people are saying it’s the best modern take on the classic monster. The box office numbers were incredible – over $115 million worldwide and a new record for a Japanese Godzilla film! But what really got to me was the powerful story and how truly terrifying Godzilla was portrayed. It even earned the franchise its first-ever Oscar for Visual Effects! Because of all this success, Toho quickly decided to make a sequel with the same team, and now we finally know what it’s called.
Toho has released a first look at the upcoming Godzilla sequel, now titled Godzilla Minus Zero. The announcement, made at Godzilla Fest 2025, confirmed that director Takashi Yamazaki will be back to write, direct, and oversee the visual effects, just as he did with the first film. This is great news for fans, as Yamazaki’s creative vision was key to the success of Minus One. He skillfully combined a strong story with incredible monster action, making the previous film a critical and popular hit. You can watch the teaser trailer here:

As a huge movie fan, I’ve been completely blown away by Godzilla Minus One. It wasn’t just a fun monster flick – it’s genuinely a fantastic film, full stop. Sure, seeing Godzilla wreck things is always a thrill, but this movie went so much deeper. It really tapped into the trauma and guilt felt by people in post-war Japan, and Godzilla himself became this incredible symbol of all that destruction and hopelessness. What really got to me was the story of Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot, and the found family he builds. Their struggles gave the whole thing an emotional weight that made the epic scale of the monster’s attacks even more impactful. Everyone’s been raving about the film’s powerful message, the characters you actually care about, and the incredibly intense direction – and it’s amazing how they pulled it all off so effectively.
Now that Godzilla Minus Zero is coming, the next movie has a good chance of being even better than the first. The huge success of Minus One means director Yamazaki and his team will likely have more creative control and financial backing. Despite being made on a tight budget, Minus One showed what they can achieve with limited means. A larger budget for the sequel could allow for a more spectacular and visually impressive film, while still keeping the personal and emotional storytelling that made the first one so great.
Yamazaki has hinted the next film will continue the story right where the first one left off, exploring what happens to the characters who survived. There’s also been talk that Mechagodzilla might appear. With this commitment to continuing the story, combined with the director’s skill and increased budget, Godzilla Minus One is set to improve on the success of the first film and create an even more impressive movie.
Godzilla Minus Zero starts filming this year.
