Godzilla Offers Closer Look at a Talking Kaiju and a Scary New Threat (Exclusive)

The King of Monsters is experiencing a rapid transformation, with a fresh influx of Godzilla content hitting comic book stores courtesy of IDW Publishing. This new phase is known as the Kai-Sei era, a linked universe that provides unique and novel experiences for Godzilla enthusiasts in each title. The initial issue, titled Godzilla, was released in July and set a record for Godzilla sales at IDW with over 80,000 orders. Such was the demand, a second printing of Godzilla #1 was necessary. Now, as all eyes are on the kaiju, fans eagerly await what the next issue holds.

In a unique presentation, ComicBook unveils advance peeks into Godzilla #2 penned by Tim Seeley, Nikola Čižmešija, Francesco Segala, Gloria Martinelli, and Nathan Widick. The three pages showcase different aspects of the story’s key elements. The narrative unfolds as a sinister new menace surfaces, targeting individuals wearing black masks. This creature appears to be a mutated organism with tendrils, mouths, and teeth, emitting a chilling “skreeeeee” screech before commencing its brutal attacks on unsuspecting victims. The artwork effectively emphasizes the disparity in size between the threat and humans, hinting that it might be another mutated kaiju we’re up against.

Moving forward, we focus on none other than Godzilla, the celestial titan. The updated design of Godzilla exudes vibrant green energy, emitting its thunderous roar while dwarfing a structure beneath it. Our anonymous narrator remarks, “Kaiju are like living storms or mobile tornadoes according to your scientific findings.” He continues, “You may argue that Godzilla’s actions aren’t personal.” In our opinion, Čižmešija masterfully illustrates an awe-inspiring and intimidating depiction of Godzilla in the comic, making it particularly noteworthy.

In the final sneak peek, we have “Lament,” a recently introduced talking monster from Godzilla #1, which ComicBook awarded a perfect 5/5 rating. It seems this series is positioning Lament as the main antagonist for the current Godzilla storyline. As Lament passes by what appears to be either screens or photographs, each depict an adult and two children together, Lament reflects on its own reproduction, stating it requires the seed of its kin. “I lament that I am the outcast… not here to save the Earth… but to destroy it.” These are chilling words from Lament, yet they provide some background on its origin.

For reproduction, Lament needs to draw from the genetic pool of other kaiju relatives. It’s important to mention that Lament submerges its colossal hand into a vat of radioactive green goo, potentially retrieving kaiju embryos.

In addition to the current Godzilla shared universe, there are two more titles joining the fold. One is “Godzilla: Escape the Deadzone,” penned by Ethan Parker and Griffin Sheridan (who have been nominated for Eisners and worked on “Kill Your Darlings”) along with artist Pablo Tunica known for his work on “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” The other title is “Starship Godzilla,” written by award-winning author Chris Gooch (“In Utero”) and featuring art from Oliver Ono, who has previously worked on “Godzilla: Monster Island Summer Camp.
