Godzilla: Ranking The King of the Monsters’ Comic Book Crossovers

Godzilla, known as the King of Monsters, seems to be at his most powerful with the ongoing success of Legendary’s MonsterVerse and Toho’s Godzilla Minus One. This giant reptile isn’t just dominating the big screen; he’s also been seen in comic books. From fighting superheroes to Power Rangers, Godzilla has left an indelible mark on this medium for nearly half a century as of this article. Given his current reign, we thought it was perfect timing to list all the comic book crossovers that feature him.

6.) Godzilla 1977

The longest comic book crossover starring Godzilla first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1977, titled “Godzilla: King of the Monsters“. This series unfolded within the Marvel Universe long before its recent counterparts. However, the story has some flaws as it features Godzilla battling characters like the Avengers, Champions, and S.H.I.E.L.D agents. The series spanned 24 issues, but one of the main criticisms is that the depiction of Godzilla in this version looks unlike any other, resembling a T-Rex more than the usual image of Godzilla.

5.) Godzilla Vs. The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers

One significant fusion of two popular universes occurred when Godzilla, the King of Monsters, squared off against the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers in the comic book world. The clash between these titans, titled “Godzilla Vs. The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers,” seamlessly merged the two series, making their encounter seem plausible. In this tale, both parties initially engaged in combat, but soon realized that collaboration would yield better results against common enemies, such as villainous kaiju and Rita Repulsa’s minions. The joint venture between Boom Studios and Toho was successful in showcasing the best aspects of both franchises while providing enjoyable reading for fans of either series.

4.) Godzilla Vs. Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers 2

The first comic crossover between Godzilla and Power Rangers was a hit, and its sequel builds on that success even more. It not only includes villains from the Power Rangers, but also introduces allies for Godzilla, such as Jet Jaguar. Both series are entertaining when they collide, but the sequel takes it up a notch by enhancing everything that was good about the original. There’s no confirmation of a third entry yet, but Godzilla is already set to meet the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in an upcoming comic book crossover.

3.) Justice League Vs. Godzilla Vs. Kong

In 2023, the seven-part miniseries Justice League Vs. Godzilla Vs. Kong brings together these two universes in an impressive fashion, adding characters such as Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom to the fray. The reason it didn’t rank higher is mainly due to less optimal use of Godzilla’s significance compared to the stories that took first and second place. However, considering King Kong acquires a Green Lantern ring, we placed this story above the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers team-up. A follow-up series is in progress, which is so extensive that it might be wise to reevaluate this list at a later time.

2.) Godzilla Destroys The Marvel Universe

In this upcoming meeting between Godzilla and Marvel’s top heroes, you can expect to see Godzilla squaring off against characters such as Spider-Man, Thor, X-Men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four. These individual battles paved the way for the main series, but the storyline, titled “Godzilla Overpowers the Marvel Universe“, is not yet finished. However, based on what we’ve seen so far, it’s shaping up to be the best comic book crossover featuring Godzilla battling Marvel’s mightiest heroes. So far, in these crossovers, Godzilla has transformed into the Hulk, been controlled by the Venom symbiote, and even served as a Galactus herald. To put it simply, this is a dream come true for fans, and we can’t wait to see more!

1.) Godzilla Vs. Charles Barkley

The concept of basketball legend Charles Barkley squaring off against Godzilla on the court might sound absurdly unworkable, but surprisingly, it’s become a reality. This extraordinary encounter between two colossal figures originally materialized in a Nike advertisement back in 1992 and has left an indelible mark on pop culture unlike anything else on this list. After that commercial, the crossover gained such popularity that they met again in a single comic book issue – so outlandish, so implausible, and yet so entertaining, it easily topped our list. Can you imagine any other crossover featuring Charles Barkley using a magical silver dollar to grow 300 feet tall, trying to dunk on Godzilla? The absurdity of Godzilla Vs. Barkley is intentionally playful, making it an amusing demonstration of the limits crossovers can reach.
