Good Boy: Shudder’s Haunted House Horror Film Gets VOD Release

I was really excited about Good Boy when it came out, and now it’s available to watch at home! It’s a horror film from Shudder with a really unique twist – the whole story is told from the point of view of a dog! It actually did surprisingly well in theaters, earning around $7 million with a tiny budget of only $750,000. That makes it Shudder’s second biggest hit ever, right after Late Night with the Devil, which brought in $16.8 million.

The movie Good Boy will be available to rent or buy digitally starting October 23rd at 9 p.m. Pacific Time. You can find it on platforms like Prime Video, and it’s currently available to pre-order for $19.99. Later on, it will also be streaming on Shudder and AMC+.

In his first feature film, director Ben Leonberg (who also co-wrote the screenplay with Alex Cannon) tells the story of a devoted dog who finds himself in a remote countryside house with his owner. When strange and frightening supernatural events begin to occur, the brave dog will do anything to protect the person he loves.

I was really surprised and delighted to discover the cast was filled with fresh faces – people like Shane Jensen, Arielle Friedman, Larry Fessenden, and Stuart Rudin. But the biggest surprise? The main character is played by director Ben Leonberg’s own dog, Indy! It’s such a charming and unexpected touch.

The horror film Good Boy, which premiered at South by Southwest in March 2025, has been widely praised by critics. They’ve called it a visually impressive and deeply moving movie that feels fresh and original, offering a truly haunting and creative experience. It currently holds an 89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Graeme Guttman of ScreenRant praised Good Boy as a surprisingly heartwarming haunted house horror film. In his review, he highlighted the unique premise of a dog protecting its owner from ghosts that only it can see, calling it a clever and well-executed genre film that fully explores its central idea.

After its theatrical release, Good Boy became Shudder’s second most profitable movie, earning more than recent films like In a Violent Nature ($4.6 million) and Oddity ($1.9 million), which both came out in 2024.

Following a lot of buzz online due to its interesting concept, Good Boy is expected to keep performing well with video-on-demand rentals and, later, on streaming services.
