Good Fortune’s Aziz Ansari Teases His Directorial Debut in Exclusive Preview

Fans eager for blockbuster comedies to grace the silver screen again have some good news coming their way this fall! Aziz Ansari takes the helm as both writer and star in his directorial debut, sharing the screen with an impressive cast that includes Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer, Sandra Oh, and Keanu Reeves. The film cleverly revisits classic tales like “It’s a Wonderful Life,” suggesting that wealth doesn’t always solve all problems, but it certainly has its perks.

“Good Fortune” will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month, giving critics an early taste before the movie hits theaters on October 17th. As we wait for this highly anticipated release, Ansari shared with ComicBook what he hopes audiences will take away from his film.

Ansari expressed his hope that they would enjoy themselves immensely and laugh their hearts out at the theater with their companions. It’d be fantastic if they continued to ponder and discuss the movie afterwards, he added.”

The Parks & Recreation veteran has been laboring on this film for quite some time now, and his ambition for a directorial debut goes back even further. Much like other cinephiles, Ansari noticed that there were fewer comedies on the big screen as a problem in Hollywood, but he viewed Barbie as a promising indication that the format could thrive in today’s cinematic environment.

The film titled “Good Fortune” shares some resemblances with popular comedy hits, and this isn’t coincidental. Given the recent screenings of “Freaky Friday“, viewers might find themselves especially receptive to the premise come fall. They may even draw parallels to other comedies such as “Trading Places“. Ansari masterfully addresses these comparisons by both acknowledging and satirizing them. He portrays Arj, a man grappling with financial struggles, who is compelled to stoop low for his wealthy L.A. boss Jeff (Rogen).

As Arj pondered his disgraceful career fate, parked at Denny’s, he encountered the angel Gabriel who emphasized that money wouldn’t erase all his troubles. To demonstrate, Gabriel swapped their lives with Jeff and Arj, but it was Gabriel himself who was astounded to see wealth effectively addressing many of Arj’s major problems. This unexpected change left Gabriel stranded on earth, amidst humans, and left everyone – including the angel – amazed as events unfolded chaotically around them.

This movie offers a playful twist that should strike a chord with modern viewers, but it also carries a genuine emotional depth. Fingers crossed that it meets the demand for more comedies and opens the door for similar productions. Good Fortune will be released in U.S. theaters on October 17th.
