The Predator series is becoming incredibly popular again. The movie Prey was a huge hit, receiving great reviews and revitalizing the franchise, which then allowed director Dan Trachtenberg to work on more projects within this world. This year, the series grew even more with the release of Predator: Killer of Killers, another fan favorite. Now, the series is preparing for a big return to cinemas with the new film Predator: Badlands, coming this November. The recent success was even more exciting thanks to a surprising cameo in Killer of Killers, which showed the frozen remains of the original hero Dutch, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Prey’s main character Naru (Amber Midthunder), effectively connecting the franchise’s past and present.
That Killer of Killers cameo could be the start of something bigger. In the newest issue of Empire magazine, Trachtenberg shared that a discussion with the iconic action star has created an opportunity for a larger return to the series. “I met Arnold,” Trachtenberg explains, “and he told me that while people think he hears ‘I’ll be back’ the most, it’s actually ‘Get to the chopper!’” He clearly understands how popular the franchise remains. He was enthusiastic about discussing further possibilities. “There’s a lot more story we could explore now-we could show how [Dutch and Naru] were captured, or what happens after they’re thawed out. There are many avenues we could take.”
Bringing Arnold Schwarzenegger Back to the Predator Franchise Is the Right Move
The original 1987 Predator remains a beloved cult classic – a brilliant combination of action, horror, and science fiction that continues to be enjoyed today. For many years, no sequel or spin-off film could compare to it. Though some installments had their strengths, none earned the same widespread acclaim from critics and audiences. It wasn’t until Trachtenberg’s Prey that the franchise finally produced a worthy follow-up. A key reason the first film is so effective is the compelling performance and commanding presence of Arnold Schwarzenegger as Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer. He grounds the movie as a charismatic and powerful hero who can face the galaxy’s deadliest hunter. It’s remarkable that, despite numerous attempts over the years, no creative team was ever able to secure Schwarzenegger for a true Predator sequel.
Reintroducing Schwarzenegger now is a brilliant decision. His appearance in Killer of Killers successfully connected the original hero of the series with the newest one, building a shared universe full of storytelling possibilities. A complete return for Dutch would delve into that connection, paying tribute to the series’ origins while also taking it in fresh and exciting directions. It would also allow fans to discover what happened to the soldier who made it out of the Val Verde jungle and how he’d cope in a world with a much more extensive history involving the Yautja. Ultimately, Schwarzenegger is still a captivating leading actor, and letting him reprise one of his most famous roles is a genuinely exciting idea.
Predator: Badlands is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 7th.
