Google’s new open-source coding agent brings Gemini AI directly to your terminal

Google has introduced a fresh open-source tool called Gemini CLI (Command-Line Interface). This new AI agent tool allows you to access Gemini straight from your terminal, offering the shortest route from your command prompt to their model.

This large software company mentioned that the tool’s functionalities go beyond just programming, encompassing various tasks such as creating content, solving problems, conducting in-depth studies, and managing tasks.

It’s important to mention that Gemini CLI has been incorporated into Google’s AI coding assistant, known as Gemini Code Assist. As a result, developers who are enrolled in the Free, Standard, and Enterprise Code Assist plans can now leverage both prompt-based and AI programming capabilities directly within Visual Studio Code and Gemini CLI.

Since Gemini CLI is an open-source project, licensed under the Apache 2.0 agreement, developers are granted the freedom to explore the underlying AI-generated code. This liberty makes it simple for them to detect and rectify any potential coding errors or security vulnerabilities that could have inadvertently been incorporated within the codebase by the technology.

Google asserts that Gemini CLI offers a variety of AI-enhanced functionalities, such as code comprehension, file management, command execution, and on-the-fly problem-solving. Moreover, it comes equipped with an enhanced user interface for the command line, providing developers with a more intuitive way to tackle issues and optimize workflows using natural language by utilizing integrated tools that:

  • Ground prompts with Google Search so you can fetch web pages and provide real-time, external context to the model
  • Extend Gemini CLI’s capabilities through built-in support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) or bundled extensions
  • Customize prompts and instructions to tailor Gemini for your specific needs and workflows
  • Automate tasks and integrate with existing workflows by invoking Gemini CLI non-interactively within your scripts

Moreover, this AI tool comes equipped with a pleasant user interface. Notably, Google grants free users 60 model requests every minute and up to 1,000 requests per day. This additional benefit is alongside the ongoing access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, which boasts an expansive context window of one million tokens.
