While promoting his new film, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, director Gore Verbinski shared stories about comic book adaptations he’s thought about. He even described pitching an idea to Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, who seemed shocked by it. Verbinski explained that the story was unlike any comic book movie ever made.
I was reading an interview with Gore Verbinski over at ComicBook about his new film, and he dropped a pretty surprising bit of news when asked about potential comic book adaptations. He said there’s a ton of great source material out there that hasn’t been touched, and then revealed he’s actually hoping to make a movie based on a comic called Ballistic, and he’s already thinking about starring Sam Rockwell – the guy from Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die – in it. It sounds really interesting!
Verbinski explained that studio executives thought his pitch was crazy. He described his idea, Ballistic, as a story about a man whose closest companion is a gun with a drug addiction – a very twisted concept. He recalled pitching it to Ted Sarandos, who was clearly shocked. Verbinski then noted that many excellent story ideas exist, and graphic novels are a particularly good source of inspiration for finding them.
Ballistic is a comic book created by Darick Robertson, the artist behind titles like Transmetropolitan and The Boys. It centers around Butch, an air conditioner repairman who dreams of becoming a master criminal. He lives in Repo City State, a bizarre island made of living, self-aware technology. Butch teams up with his friend, Gun – a genetically-modified, talking firearm with a serious attitude and a drug problem. The comic blends the detailed world-building of Transmetropolitan with the over-the-top violence of The Boys. In fact, Grant Morrison named it his favorite comic of the year it was released.
Gore Verbinski Makes Comeback With 2026 Sci-Fi Action Thriller

Director Gore Verbinski, known for the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films, hadn’t made a movie since 2016’s A Cure for Wellness. Before that, his last project was The Lone Ranger in 2013. After a nine-year break, he’s back with his new film, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die.
After finishing with the Pirates of the Caribbean films in 2007, director Gore Verbinski has only made a few movies. Luckily, his recent film, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, shows he’s still the talented director behind hits like The Ring and the animated film Rango. It’s a fun, energetic time travel movie with a surprising amount of heart. It makes you wonder what he could accomplish with a different project, like Ballistic.
