GPT-4o Is Back From the Dead — The “Best Friend” of Many ChatGPT Users Now Comes at a Price

As a curious onlooker, I’ve noticed that GPT-4o has made a return, albeit for a select group of users. The temporary disappearance of this model, in favor of the new GPT-5, sparked quite a reaction. However, it seems OpenAI has reconsidered and now allows ChatGPT Plus users to continue utilizing the trusted GPT-4o.

Occasionally, public outcry can lead to positive change. In a similar vein to how fans’ complaints led to a redesign of Sonic the Hedgehog, constructive criticism prompted OpenAI to reinstate GPT-4o. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed this feedback and the actions taken in response on platform X.

1. For ChatGPT Plus users, we are increasing the GPT-5 rate limits by double as we complete its rollout.

2. Plus users will be given the option to keep using the current model (version 40) while we observe usage patterns and consider how long to continue offering legacy models.

3. Starting August 8, 2025, GPT-5 is expected to appear more intelligent.

Primarily, users of GPT-Plus can opt for GPT-4o, an adaptation of the GPT-4 model. The CEO clarified that ChatGPT will make it clear which model is responding to a particular query and assured that the company will monitor this development to decide how long they continue to provide the legacy models in the future.

In the name GPT-4o, the “o” represents “omni,” indicating that it’s designed as an all-encompassing or versatile version. However, GPT-4o is a more affordable and quicker alternative to its original counterpart, GPT-4.

While GPT-4o is back as an option, using it now requires a paid subscription.

What is GPT-5?

The newest model from OpenAI, named GPT-5, was unveiled by the technology firm on August 7. It became available worldwide on the very same day of its announcement.

There are four different versions of GPT-5: GPT-5, GPT-5 Mini, GPT-5 Nano, and GPT-5 Chat. By default, ChatGPT will select the optimal model to answer your question. However, you also have the option to manually choose features like “Extended Response” or “Comprehensive Research.

The new model, GPT-5, was created with the aim of being more precise and dependable compared to its predecessors from OpenAI. Furthermore, it’s expected that this model will have a reduced tendency towards hallucinations.

With the launch of GPT-5, OpenAI significantly changed direction from its previous models, leaving some users feeling disconcerted. Unlike its predecessor GPT-4o, GPT-5 offers a distinctly unique presentation that doesn’t sit well with everyone, as it’s not universally viewed as an improvement.

Why do some people prefer GPT-4o?

Many find that GPT-40 seems more conversational and relatable compared to its subsequent version. The previous model was known for incorporating wit or exhibiting characteristics akin to a personality, within the limits of a Language Model, of course.

Compared to GPT-4, the upgraded version, GPT-5, exhibits greater capabilities, yet it maintains a more formal demeanor in its responses. It tends to offer direct and serious answers, even when asked for humorous or casual responses.

I lean more towards the precise character of GPT-5, but when it comes to research and polishing content, I opt for ChatGPT instead. To be honest, I haven’t really engaged in a laid-back chat with ChatGPT yet.

A significant number of Reddit users view ChatGPT not just as a tool but more like a trusted ally or close confidant, even referring to it affectionately as their “soulmate” or “dearest friend.

The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, has addressed concerns about relying on ChatGPT as a form of therapy, stating it could lead to significant privacy issues. Various studies indicate that excessive use of AI might impair critical reasoning, potentially lead to brain shrinkage, and foster feelings of loneliness.

It’s important to note that just as ChatGPT might recommend taking a break after extended use, I think it would be beneficial for some Reddit users to do the same.

Who can use GPT-4o?

Following the introduction of GPT-5, OpenAI declared that they would phase out their earlier GPT models. As a result, temporarily, access to GPT-40 was restricted and not available for use by anyone.

Following user feedback, OpenAI has revised its strategy, enabling ChatGPT Plus users to opt for the GPT-4 model should they prefer it.

The suggested solution isn’t expected to silence critics as it restricts the preferred model of certain users by requiring payment through a subscription service (ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month). This means that users who were previously enjoying the use of GPT-4o for free are now asked to pay for a model that became paid only recently.
