During the early seasons of the show Grace, a central mystery revolved around the detective’s wife, Sandy, who had vanished years before.
She returned in season 4, but tragically died before the season ended. Season 5 revealed more about her past: John Simm’s character discovered she’d run away due to gambling debts, and that she was having an affair with Cassian Pewe, who was involved in her disappearance.
By the end of season 5, it was revealed that Cassian had been involved in shady dealings. He told Grace the truth about Sandy’s death: she was killed by people she owed money to, and now those same people would target Grace and Roy’s son, Bruno, who Cassian and Cleo are currently raising.
During a recent discussion about season six, actor Simm shared that the story of Sandy will continue, despite her character being deceased.
The mystery surrounding Sandy has been present from the beginning of the show,” Simm explained. “It’s something his character can’t simply get used to, but as the investigation unfolds, the audience gradually learns the truth. It’s a really captivating story.

He explained that he feared the story would end with the mystery solved and the character’s death, leaving nothing more to explore. He believes a compelling show needs significant conflict and drama, and that this character requires a major life event to create that, but the underlying issues won’t simply disappear.
The consequences of the events surrounding Sandy’s are still strongly felt by everyone involved, particularly Grace and Branson. They’re facing very serious risks, and people they care about are in danger, which is a constant concern for them.
Simm also expressed his enjoyment of the show’s departure from the original Peter James novels. He believes this allows storylines, like the one involving Sandy, to surprise even those familiar with the books.

We’ve made changes to who lives and dies compared to the original books,” he explained. “Even if you’re familiar with the source material, you’ll still be surprised by what happens.
The novel and the TV show are distinct, so it was good we took the show in a different direction and gave it its own unique feel.
