The acclaimed actor Graham Greene, recognized for his Oscar-nominated performance in “Dances with Wolves,” memorable roles in “The Green Mile” and more recently in hit TV shows such as “The Last of Us” and “Echo,” has passed away at the age of 73. After a prolonged struggle with an unspecified illness, he breathed his last. His wife, Hilary Blackmore, and daughter, Lilly Lazare-Greene, survive him.
For more than four decades, Greene has built an extensive and multifaceted body of work in film and television. Apart from those already mentioned, audiences have likely encountered him in numerous popular films and shows like “Murder, She Wrote,” “Casino Jack,” “Longmire,” “Maverick,” “Transamerica,” and even “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.” Additionally, his contributions extend to motion capture and voice acting for the celebrated video game “Red Dead Redemption 2.”
In his illustrious career, Greene often appeared alongside renowned actors such as Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson, Felicity Huffman, Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, and Lou Diamond Phillips in various films. Notable filmmakers like Richard Donner and Aaron Sorkin were also part of his collaborative journey. Greene’s acting skills earned him several award nominations, with a significant nod for Best Supporting Actor at the 1991 Academy Awards for his role as Kicking Bird in “Dances with Wolves”. Although Joe Pesci won that year, Greene’s performance was widely acclaimed. Additionally, he was bestowed multiple lifetime achievement awards and even claimed a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for Children for “Listen to the Storyteller.
In a later turn of events, although not his most iconic performances, Gary Oldman gained recognition within geek culture communities, particularly through his entertaining portrayal of Marlon, a Wyoming Native American living in isolation with his wife Florence, in the first season of “The Last of Us.” In this role, he provided a welcome dose of charm and humor after an emotionally intense episode, as he warned Joel and Ellie about dangerous outlaws (later revealed to be the Jackson militia) lurking in the area.

Following this, Greene made an appearance as Skully in the Disney+ spin-off series “Echo”, starring Alaqua Cox. In the show, Echo (or Maya) experiences tension with a large portion of her family, primarily due to their associations with Kingpin. However, Skully, who serves as a sort of grandfatherly figure to Maya, showed understanding towards Echo’s actions and her role within the family. He even constructed a prosthetic leg for Echo after her original was damaged in Episode 2. Greene was endearing in his portrayal, providing support to Echo and engaging in flirtatious banter with Echo’s estranged grandmother, Chula Battiest, played by Tantoo Cardinal.
As a fellow film enthusiast, let me share my perspective on this captivating cinematic journey penned by a remarkable individual – Greene. In his heartfelt review, Greene sheds light on his personal journey within the film industry as a member of the First Nations community. He candidly discusses the challenges he faced early in his career, confronting stereotyping and racism head-on.
However, it’s not just about the hardships; Greene also emphasizes the instances where white directors and producers failed to grasp the authenticity of Native American characters, offering misguided advice on their portrayal. Interestingly, Greene didn’t shy away from these challenges. Instead, he stood his ground, pushing back against these inaccuracies and triumphing in his pursuit for genuine representation.
In the very same interview, the actor also implied an enhancement – particularly in Canada: “It’s just acting if you can act, otherwise find another endeavor.
