Grammys producer Ben Winston believes there is beauty in mistakes.
Following Cher’s mistake while presenting the Record of the Year award at the 2026 ceremony on February 1st, the Emmy-winning artist described what happened behind the scenes with host Trevor Noah.
Ben actually instructed Trevor to help Cher after her Lifetime Achievement Award speech. He told Trevor through his earpiece, “You’ve just gotta get up and bring her back,” which is why Trevor quickly stepped in to prevent her from leaving the stage, according to an interview with Rolling Stone.
Cher made another mistake during the Grammy Awards when she announced Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s song, “Luther,” as Record of the Year.
Cher announced, “And the Grammy goes to…” but then paused, looking confused. She explained, “Oh, I was told the winner’s name would be displayed on the teleprompter.”
When Cher opened her envelope and saw “Luther” was the winner, she mistakenly thought it was referring to the late singer Luther Vandross, who had won eight Grammy Awards and passed away in 2005.
Although the song contest winners were surprised at first, Ben pointed out that the situation was beautifully flawed – a perfect moment despite its imperfections.
He said he’d happily relive the experience if he could. She really enjoyed it and had a wonderful time, and he believes everyone needs a little bit of spontaneity.
SZA also didn’t think Cher’s error mattered. The song “Luther” actually uses samples from both Luther Vandross and Cheryl Lynn’s “If This World Were Mine.”

You know, after the awards show, I was chatting with someone about the song I did with Kendrick, and they pointed something out that really resonated with me. It’s not about copying, but more about tapping into a certain feeling – a ‘frequency,’ if you will – that artists like that incredible R&B singer just naturally possess. We definitely drew inspiration from that same energy when we were creating the track.
You know, when I talk to someone with a really classic vibe, like SZA was describing, it’s amazing how their experiences connect to the present. She was saying this woman likely grew up listening to artists like Luther Vandross, and that background naturally influences how she connects with the energy we’re all creating now. It’s like a beautiful bridge between generations – her memories and feelings blend with the current moment, creating something really special.
As she put it, “We’re mooching off of what Luther already gave us, so we’re grateful.”

It’s those little personal touches that really make a difference for fans, and it’s a great pen, too – smooth writing and really makes the autographs pop!
