The DC Universe (DCU) is still under construction, and it’s already running into some problems. However, Grant Gustin, known for playing The Flash, might be able to help. The new DCU is a bit confusing when it comes to established storylines. It’s being presented as a fresh start, but some previous elements are still being included.
The DC Universe’s timeline seems a bit inconsistent. Superman is relatively new to being a hero, having only been active for three years, but characters like Batman and Green Lantern have been fighting crime for a much longer time. As new heroes are added, fans are hoping for a clearer, more consistent timeline.
Although the Flash hasn’t been announced for the new DC Universe yet, it looks like a Justice League will eventually happen. Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are all confirmed or in development, but several other key heroes, like the Flash, need to appear before the Justice League officially launches.
Grant Gustin Should Play Barry Allen In The DCU – But Not The Main Flash
I grew up watching Grant Gustin as The Flash! He played Barry Allen for about ten years over on The CW’s Arrowverse, and honestly, he became the Flash for a lot of us. While his portrayal was amazing, it’s worth noting that his version of the character wasn’t exactly the same as the one from the comics – there were some cool differences!
During his time as The Flash, Gustin’s Barry Allen never officially joined the Justice League, though he did team up with many famous heroes. If he were to return in the new DC Universe, this version of the character would be a great fit – even if it took a bit of help from someone like Cisco to bring him over from another world.
Grant Gustin would be a perfect choice to play an older, more seasoned Barry Allen. Alternatively, if the new DC Universe wants to distance itself from the previous Arrowverse shows, they could feature Gustin as a Barry Allen who is either deceased or unaccounted for. Either way, including him would be a fantastic way to honor the past and recognize the fans who have supported the character.
Why The DCU’s Flash Should Be Wally West Instead Of Barry Allen
The DC Universe has moved away from Henry Cavill as Superman, now featuring David Corenswet in the role. It seems they’re largely starting fresh with the stories, except for elements from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. Using a new version of The Flash fits with this fresh start for the universe.
The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) didn’t have many films, and its characters didn’t appear often. However, Grant Gustin played the Flash consistently for years, across multiple TV series and big team-up events. Because fans know and love Gustin as the Flash, they could embrace the next Flash, Wally West, and continue the character’s story.
Using Wally West gives the DC Universe more freedom to create a fresh version of the character, instead of simply copying or completely reinventing the Flash we saw with Gustin. This allows for greater creative flexibility and a chance to introduce a lesser-known comic book hero to a wider audience.
The DCU’s Timeline Means Barry Allen Can Already Be Gone By Now
Elsewhere in the DC Universe, we’re already seeing a trend of established heroes stepping into mentor roles as new characters take the lead. A great example is Hal Jordan, who will appear in the upcoming Lanterns series alongside the new Green Lantern, John Stewart. While Hal Jordan’s history is still important, John Stewart will be the main Green Lantern going forward.
The DC Universe has confirmed that people with superpowers have existed for a while. Because of this, James Gunn is free to show that Barry Allen, the previous Flash, has already had his time as a hero and is now stepping aside. This creates a natural opportunity for Wally West to become the new Flash in the DCU.
It’s great to see Barry Allen return, whether as an experienced hero mentoring others or simply continuing his journey out of the spotlight. It’s a fitting tribute to Grant Gustin’s portrayal of the character and ensures the Flash remains an important part of the DC Universe.
The future of the DC Universe under James Gunn is wide open, especially with new heroes like the Flash being introduced. While many details are still uncertain and there aren’t current plans for a specific Flash-focused story, Grant Gustin still deserves a chance to play the Flash in the new DCU, even if it’s not as a traditional superhero.
