The tenth season of the ITV drama Grantchester will explore the developing dynamic between Detective Geordie Keating and the new vicar, Alphy Kottaram, and how their partnership is challenged.
Their relationship began tensely – the new vicar was actually mistaken for a burglar and ended up punching Geordie! However, the initial conflict faded, and they eventually found a comfortable rhythm, developing a genuine friendship.
I remember when Alphy first walked into the pub, Geordie and I were just sitting there and I couldn’t help but ask him what his deal was, what made him tick. I straight-up asked, ‘What’s your secret, Alphy?’ And he just looked at me and said, ‘I don’t have one, mate. I’m a pretty ordinary, straightforward guy.’ It was a surprisingly honest answer, and it definitely set the tone for our interactions.
Geordie suspects something is hidden, a secret and a deception within Alphy that comes out in season ten. This revelation deeply impacts their relationship, causing a significant rift, and also affects the entire community of Grantchester, as do the various crimes they investigate.
Green’s costar, Rishi Nair, went on to explain how that is connected to Alphy’s love life.

Since we last spoke to Alphy, he’s been dating around. It seems he struggles with commitment and being in a relationship, likely due to past experiences. He appears to be afraid of getting close to someone and settling down.
Look, this character is clearly lonely. He opens up to Geordie, admitting he envies the connection Geordie shares with Cathy – he wants that kind of relationship for himself. And the story sets him up with someone who could be the one, but the big question is whether he’s emotionally ready to truly let someone in. It’s a really interesting internal struggle, and it feels very real.

Nair explained that the character faces significant challenges in season 10, forcing him to confront past issues he believed he’d resolved.
Dealing with difficult situations impacts all your relationships, both with people you already know, like Geordie, and with those you’re just meeting. This new relationship is being put to the test as a result.
I’m really looking forward to the next episode of the show! It’s the second-to-last one, and I’m glad to see Geordie and Alphy teaming up again – they make a great crime-solving pair, and it’s all set in the beautiful location of Grantchester. I’ve heard it’s already been shown in the US, so I know it’s good!
The story also shows how these characters need to lean on each other during difficult times, whether it’s dealing with family issues or keeping personal secrets, according to the official description.
Alphy finally feels safe and like he belongs, but he’s now facing hidden truths he’s been keeping to himself. He needs to decide if he can truly open up to others, or if he needs to understand his own past first.
