Gremlins 3 Just Got a Major Update (Could It Actually Happen?)

35 years ago, when “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” was released in theaters, it didn’t make as much money as the first one and was a letdown for many viewers. At that moment, it seemed unlikely that there would ever be a third “Gremlins” movie. However, in today’s world where revival sequels are successful, films like “Beetlejuice 2” and “Happy Gilmore 2” have shown great success, it seems that a third “Gremlins” film might not be such an impossible dream after all.

It appears that the possibility of Gremlins 3, which was previously considered a remote chance, might transform into an unquestionable truth. This latest news is brought to us by none other than Billy Peltzer, played by Zach Galligan.

At Comic Con Manchester, Galligan shared that Warner Bros., the studio behind the distribution of the initial two Gremlins movies, has shown strong interest in creating a third one. This tidbit alone is certainly exciting news for fans.

Instead of saying “But the actor went on to reveal just where the project is at the moment,” you could rephrase it as “However, the actor provided an update on the current state of the project.” In his own words, he said, “After a gap of 35 years, they’ve finally drafted a script” and “it seems it’s in limbo, awaiting Mr. Spielberg’s review and approval.” The sudden progress on Gremlins 3, as per Galligan, can be attributed to the recent success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

There’s been chatter about this specific legacy sequel here and there throughout the year, but this recent news is particularly thrilling. Previously, we only knew that a script was being developed. However, having a script in progress doesn’t necessarily mean much. Many scripts, even for large-scale projects, can go through numerous writers before eventually fading out with no result.

This script is either fully done or nearly finished, reaching a stage where it’s landed on Steven Spielberg’s desk. After circulating in the rumors for over a decade, it appears that things are finally moving forward with this project.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but wonder about the cast for the upcoming sequel. Without a doubt, Galligan will undoubtedly be back. The question, however, lingers regarding the return of director Joe Dante and our beloved co-lead, Phoebe Cates.

Dante isn’t retired, but he hasn’t directed a film since “Burying the Ex” in 2014. The success of “Gremlins” was his most notable achievement during his time directing films like “Piranha” and “The Howling”, so it seems likely that if presented with the chance to direct a follow-up, he would take on such a project.

Although Cates has retired, it’s worth noting that she briefly came out of retirement to lend her voice to the character Kate Beringer in the video game “Lego Dimensions,” which was a role she played in the movie “Gremlins.” This suggests that the character and its franchise hold significant value for her. Who knows, with Billy being present, there’s always a chance she might return to the spotlight again.

No matter who returns to the production of Gremlins 3, what kind of movie will it be? Will it follow in the footsteps of the original horror-focused film or take a turn towards a live-action comedy like its popular sequel, reminiscent of Looney Tunes? In any case, we’re eager to see what’s next!
