After the success of Band of Brothers, two additional series were created. There’s also another World War II project featuring Tom Hanks that some consider a fourth installment. Hanks and Steven Spielberg collaborated on this 2001 series, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest TV shows ever made. Although it was originally a limited series, HBO was interested in continuing the story with another season.
Following the success of Band of Brothers, HBO released The Pacific in 2010, with Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg as executive producers. While not quite as highly regarded as Band of Brothers, it still received strong positive reviews for its depiction of the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II. Fourteen years later, the story continued with Masters of the Air, a nine-part miniseries available on Apple TV, focusing on the experiences of the 100th Bomb Group.
Similar to his role with The Pacific, Tom Hanks also served as an executive producer for Masters of the Air. But before Masters of the Air premiered on Apple TV+, another war drama featuring Hanks was released on the platform. Although this new series isn’t a direct continuation of Band of Brothers or the other companion shows, there’s a noteworthy link between them.
Greyhound Can Be Considered The 4th Band Of Brothers Project
As a huge fan of the WWII stories Tom Hanks has been involved with – Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and now Masters of the Air – I always considered everything connected. But did you know there’s actually a fourth piece to this puzzle? Before Masters of the Air dropped on Apple TV, they released Greyhound, a film starring Hanks as a Navy commander fighting in the Atlantic. It’s a bit different because Steven Spielberg wasn’t involved this time, but Hanks actually wrote the screenplay himself, which makes it feel like a companion piece to the other shows for me.
While the US Navy played a significant role in the Pacific Theater of World War II and has been featured in The Pacific miniseries, it’s the only major military branch that hasn’t had its own dedicated, in-depth series like Band of Brothers. Band of Brothers followed an Army company, The Pacific centered on the Marines, and Masters of the Air highlighted the Air Force. This has led to speculation about a potential Navy-focused companion series, and someone involved with these productions recently addressed the possibility.
In an interview with Den of Geek, Gary Goetzman, the executive producer of Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and Masters of the Air, discussed the possibility of a new World War II series focusing on the Navy. He pointed to the film Greyhound as essentially an extension of their previous work, noting that the creative team behind the movie views it as a companion piece to those shows, with Tom Hanks involved in its creation.
Will There Be Another Official Band Of Brothers Companion Show After Masters Of The Air?
The movie Greyhound was exciting and realistically portrayed the Navy’s efforts to fight German U-boats in a particularly dangerous part of the Atlantic during World War II. However, movies don’t have as much time to tell a complete story as longer miniseries like Band of Brothers, The Pacific, and Masters of the Air. So, it makes sense that some viewers would like to see another series created, perhaps one specifically focused on the Navy’s role in the war.
Currently, there aren’t any plans for a new Band of Brothers series after the release of Masters of the Air, though that could easily change. Even if future projects don’t focus on the Navy, there are many compelling stories from World War II that could be adapted into a series. Similar to Greyhound, which was based on a historical novel, there’s a wealth of source material available to inspire new shows or movies.
A sequel to Greyhound is in development, and Tom Hanks will return as Commander Ernie Krause. This new film will follow the same naval crew, with a major focus on the D-Day landings and the battles in the Pacific Theater. Production is scheduled to begin in early 2026, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet. Since there are currently no plans for more Band of Brothers projects, the Greyhound sequel will again be the closest comparable film.
