Eric Dane, known for his role in Grey’s Anatomy, is returning to television medical dramas with an upcoming appearance on Brilliant Minds. Photos from the episode have just been released. Dane first gained widespread recognition when he joined Grey’s Anatomy in 2006, playing the character Mark Sloan, nicknamed ‘McSteamy’. He left the show in 2012 when his character was killed off in a plane crash.
Dane is returning to medical television with a guest appearance on Brilliant Minds. He’ll be playing Matthew, a firefighter who is living with ALS ā the same condition the actor himself has. The episode, titled “The Fire Fighter,” will focus on Matthew’s struggle to share his diagnosis with his family.
MƤdchen Amick will play Matthew’s former wife, Alicia, and Chloe Avakian will play their daughter, Gabby.
TVInsider shared four sneak peek photos from an upcoming episode of Brilliant Minds season 2, hinting at what viewers can expect from guest star Daneās role. One photo shows Dane, playing a character named Matthew, sitting by a fire truck. His ex-wife looks worried as she observes Dr. Oliver Wolf, portrayed by Zachary Quinto, who is a neurologist.
The second picture is a close-up of Dane’s character, Matthew. The last two photos feature Matthew, Alicia, and their daughter Gabby at the doctor’s office, talking with doctors Wolf and Carol Pierce, who is played by Tamberla Perry.
In several photos, Gabby is shown typing on her phone, perhaps to jot down notes while the doctors talk or to research her fatherās illness. You can find the Brilliant Minds pictures featuring Dane here:
The storyline in Brilliant Minds closely mirrors real life, as actor Dane was diagnosed with ALS earlier this year. ALS is a disease that progressively causes loss of muscle control, and currently has no cure. Throughout 2025, Dane has publicly shared his experiences with the condition, including losing movement in his right hand and arm, and eventually needing to use a wheelchair.
The TV show Grey’s Anatomy launched Dane’s career in Hollywood. He played Sloan, a key character and the best friend of Derek Shepherd, who famously had a relationship with Derek’s wife. After leaving Grey’s Anatomy, Dane went on to star in several films and TV shows, including The Last Ship, Euphoria, and Countdown.
Dane is set to return for season 3 of Euphoria, which is scheduled to premiere in 2026. Before that, heāll be appearing as a guest star on Brilliant Minds this fall, and the episode promises to be especially moving for both viewers of the show and his fans.
Brilliant Minds airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on NBC.
