A lot of the talk about Grey’s Anatomy coming back in 2025 focuses on the explosion that ended the last season. However, the explosion in “How Do I Live” affected more than just the Grey Sloan Memorial operating room-Teddy and Owen’s marriage also fell apart. Could this create an opportunity for Sophia Bush’s character, Cass, to reappear in Season 22? Showrunner Meg Marinis has shared what she thinks, and I have some pretty strong feelings about it too.
During Season 21, Teddy Altman and Owen Hunt (played by Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd) briefly considered opening up their marriage. For a short time, Teddy shared a passionate kiss with Cass Beckman, but ultimately decided she wanted to stay committed to Owen. Owen, however, didn’t have the same reservations and slept with Nora (Floriana Lima), a childhood friend of his sister. Now that Teddy and Owen are no longer together, could Teddy and Cass rekindle their connection? TVLine reports that Meg Marinis said:
Wow, that makes a lot of sense to me. And Sophia is a really wonderful person. We would be so happy if she came back. It’s great!
Following a romantic encounter with Owen, Nora – who had traveled to Seattle for treatment from Teddy – believed she was seriously ill and decided to tell Teddy, her best friend’s brother, how she felt about him. I correctly guessed that Teddy would find a way to save her, but I might have misjudged whether that would make things more difficult.
Rather, when Owen wouldn’t say whether he felt the same way about Nora-he only stated he’d end their relationship to protect his marriage to Teddy-Teddy unexpectedly decided to leave. Perhaps, just maybe, this time she’s leaving for good.
I believe Owen is generally one of the most unappealing romantic partners in Grey’s Anatomy, and his unhealthy relationship with Teddy dragged on for far too long. I really hope Teddy finds a more fulfilling relationship in the future.
As a longtime fan, I was really hooked by how Cass complicated things between Teddy and Owen back in Season 21, and it sounds like Meg Marinis is hinting at bringing the character back. She followed up by saying:
I definitely think Sophia has a really vibrant personality. She’s full of energy and brings that to everything she does. The character we developed for her has a similar impact. Whether she’s in a professional setting or just talking to people personally, I think people naturally gravitate towards her. That’s really enjoyable to explore as a writer.
I really hope the writers give Cass lots of exciting and enjoyable storylines. No one deserves it more than Teddy. Plus, it would be great to see her playfully tease Owen with her good fortune.
Okay, so as a huge fan, I’m still holding out hope for Sophia Bush to return for Season 22, but it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. The good news is Floriana Lima *is* coming back in a recurring role, which means there’s definitely more story to tell! And honestly, I *need* to know if Link (or anyone else!) survived that explosion – I’ve even got a pretty crazy theory about it brewing. Thankfully, we don’t have much longer to wait to find out!
Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 will begin airing at 10 p.m. Eastern Time on Thursday, October 9th, on ABC. You can also watch it the following day if you have a Hulu subscription.
