Grey’s Anatomy Stars Debate Finale Explosion Death, But I Disagree With Harry Shum Jr.

Even though there’s plenty of time left until Grey’s Anatomy appears on our screens again in 2025, viewers have been mulling over the potential victims of the Season 21 finale’s shocking explosion for quite some time now. However, it’s not just the fans who are speculating; even the stars of this long-running ABC medical series aren’t privy to the answer yet. Recently, Camilla Luddington and Harry Shum Jr. shared their thoughts on the matter, but I find myself disagreeing with Shum’s theory.

It’s worth mentioning that I had a hunch Piper Perabo’s character on Grey’s Anatomy would take on a dramatic turn similar to Yellowstone. While she didn’t find herself in a physical altercation with Beth Dutton or the like, her character, Jenna, took a more extreme approach when she crafted a bomb and held several surgeons hostage until they performed emergency brain surgery on her daughter. The season ended with everyone appearing to be safe, but at the last moment in Season 21, an explosion occurred. Harry Shum Jr., known as Blue Kwan, shared his overly positive prediction for the next season’s unveiling with US Weekly, stating:

I’m hoping it isn’t me. Maybe there’s a strange misunderstanding going on instead. I can’t say for sure, but I strongly doubt that’s what’s happening. We’ll find out soon enough.

It seems even Harry Shum Jr., being well-versed in such matters, might find it highly improbable that an explosion occurred within someone’s mind. Admittedly, Grey’s Anatomy hasn’t terminated a main character since Andrew DeLuca in Season 17 – although it has bid farewell to many cast members through other means. However, I believe the show would prefer to explain that the operating room was unoccupied rather than claiming no explosion actually occurred at all.

It’s my conviction that someone has indeed passed away, but I’m unsure of who it is. Previously, it seemed like Chris Carmack’s character, Link, and Nurse Linda might have been the ones who perished. This assumption was bolstered by Carmack reenacting a popular “Friends” scene, which added to the belief. The peaceful life that Link was living prior to this final instance made me accept this theory initially.

In the second-to-last episode, Link and Jo Wilson tied the knot, followed by a “hospital honeymoon.” Later, Jo informed her husband that they were expecting twin girls. It seems as if such happiness is always followed by tragedy, doesn’t it? Upon reflection, I’m considering whether Link could have been a distraction. Frankly, I’m bewildered! I knew the finale would leave me feeling perplexed!

If Link (the character) has been on Camilla Luddington’s mind, even though she may not have been formally informed about it, she did mention this fact herself. In other words, the character of Link has been a thought-provoking subject for Camilla Luddington.

I’m completely clueless. I’m in constant communication with numerous cast members who keep asking my opinion, yet none of us have a clue. It’s utterly terrifying because we’ve witnessed so much and know so much. I’m never relaxed during any season, as there’s always something to worry about.

The potential outcome of Link’s demise, or severe harm, would be heartbreaking for Jo, especially since they are on the verge of welcoming their twins. It seems that Camilla Luddington hopes Jo won’t have to endure the hardship of being a widowed mother of four. She went on to say:

I’m really concerned about my on-screen spouse’s wellbeing, as their relationship is vital for both of them, especially given their family situation with four children in total. If anything happens, it could complicate matters significantly.

Currently, only Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Ben Warren (Jason George) appear to be unharmed because they were in the parking lot during the explosion. It’s already been announced that Pompeo will reprise her role for Season 22.

Harry Shum Jr.’s imagined explosion might not align with my beliefs, but considering the unusual events that have occurred on this series, it’s possible. As for now, “Grey’s Anatomy” stands out as an excellent choice for binge-watching on Netflix. Interestingly, all 21 seasons can be streamed with a Hulu or Disney+ subscription too.

As a devoted movie buff, I’m eagerly awaiting the premiere date for “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 22. With the news that “Doctor Odyssey” has been officially cancelled, there’s a chance we might see “Grey’s” return to its original Thursday timeslot this fall. Keep your eyes peeled for further updates!
