Grimes can’t keep her thoughts to herself when it comes to defending Selena Gomez.
Shortly after Selena Gomez released her music video for “In The Dark” on October 23rd, she responded to online criticism about her appearance in it.
Grimes recently shared on X (formerly Twitter) that she might need to take a break from the internet after only 48 hours. She explained this came after seeing a negative post and then watching a video of Selena Gomez. Despite some awkward moments in the video that were taken out of context online, Grimes said Gomez ‘looks extremely beautiful’ and is ‘probably one of the most beautiful girls.’
The 37-year-old mother of five-year-old X Æ A-XII, three-year-old Exa, and three-year-old Techno Mechanicus – all with her ex, Elon Musk – asked people to consider how they would feel if they were being negatively discussed online, especially regarding the former star of Wizards of Waverly Place.
Grimes went on to say, “It’s hard to fathom the strength this person must have. Shouldn’t we strongly condemn someone who gains popularity from a post like this and then prioritizes that attention over the well-being of others? Think about how young girls might feel seeing this kind of content about another woman.”
Indeed, she went on to disavow the “high school level” bullying taking place online.
She argued that accounts repeatedly engaging in body shaming should be suspended. She also found the situation troubling, adding that the claims being made weren’t supported by the video itself.
The singer of Genesis described X as a very unhealthy environment, adding that its acceptance as normal behavior represents a decline in culture.

Grimes explained this wasn’t just about Selena or the person who wrote the harmful content, but about everyone who views and participates in this kind of degrading behavior.
Selena, who has publicly shared her struggle with Lupus, hasn’t directly responded to the recent criticism. However, she has previously defended herself against people who focus on and judge her appearance, particularly regarding speculation about cosmetic surgery.
In 2024, Selena responded to TikTok speculation about her appearance, stating plainly, “I hate this.” She clarified that she only uses Botox and asked to be left alone.

Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s daughter shared on TikTok that she recently experienced something upsetting: two strangers made comments about her body. She posted about it on May 3rd, calling it a significant moment for her as a woman online.
It’s just unbelievable to me. One person told me I needed to be on Ozempic because of my size, and then another actually accused me of starving myself! The crazy part is, my weight hadn’t changed at all during that time – and honestly, even if it had, it’s none of their concern!
Ava believes everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of their appearance. She emphasized that you never know someone’s personal struggles and that true beauty goes far beyond how someone looks.

Following negative comments about her body, the singer of “I’m Good” responded to her critics, explaining she’s had enough of being judged for how she looks. In a tweet on June 23rd, she acknowledged she’s gained weight, but firmly stated she’s tired of the conversation and wants it to stop.
In another post, the 33-year-old explained that people’s weight naturally changes, and it’s important to remember everyone has their own struggles. She mentioned things like medication and illness can also play a role.

Following criticism about her appearance in an Instagram photo, the actress known for The House Bunny responded to those commenting on her weight. She explained that while she usually doesn’t feel the need to address such comments, she wanted to raise awareness about body shaming. She admitted the photo’s angle made her look thinner than she is and that she was initially upset by the negative comments, as she had simply been having fun. Ultimately, she emphasized that people don’t have the right to publicly criticize or judge anyone’s body.
She explained that comments about her weight, whether criticizing her for being too thin or telling her to eat more, are hurtful and constitute body shaming. She firmly stated she won’t tolerate any form of body shaming.
Over a week later, she posted a bikini photo with a message for her critics, playfully writing, “To those who disapprove… with love and thanks, here’s a kiss [kiss emoji] and a smile [peace sign emoji]! I’ll keep on smiling no matter what.”

In February 2021, the actress addressed online rumors about her being pregnant. The speculation started when photos circulated online showing her on set in Australia wearing a dark blue tank top. She publicly called out the New York Post on Instagram, writing, “I’m not pregnant, but it’s still okay to comment on a woman’s body in 2021? Do better.”

Christina Hall, known from Flip or Flop, recently addressed online criticism about her body. In a video posted to Instagram on February 7th, she explained that she’s actually at her normal weight, and people are simply noticing the changes after her pregnancies. She reassured fans that she’s healthy and doing well.

The singer, who recently faced criticism online about her body and weight, responded to the negativity without saying a word. She subtly addressed the body-shamers through her actions.
During her performance at Manchester Pride 2025, she wore a large T-shirt featuring a graphic of a woman in a cropped tank top and push-up bra.

After her separation from Jim Edmonds, the former Bravo star asked fans to stop commenting on her weight. In a December 2019 Instagram post, she admitted she was very thin and often received comments like “Eat a burger.” She asked for understanding, explaining she was prioritizing her children and handling a difficult situation with as much strength as possible.

The singer responded to criticism about their weight, telling Entertainment Tonight that they’ve always been thin due to their active lifestyle. They explained that ballet, stretching, and working out are important for their overall well-being – mind, body, and spirit – and questioned what was wrong with being healthy and fit.
She explained that criticism comes with the territory, and she focuses on what benefits her personally. She leaves behind anything that doesn’t serve her, trusting her management to handle any resulting issues. Ultimately, she believes it’s important to prioritize her own well-being and accept that you can’t make everyone happy.

Back in June 2020, singer Lizzo responded to criticism about her body with a powerful message. In a TikTok video, she explained that she’s been consistently working out for five years, but not to achieve anyone else’s beauty standards. “I’m working out to get my ideal body,” she said, adding, “and frankly, what that looks like is none of your concern. I’m beautiful, I’m strong, and I’m focused on my work.”

The singer known for her song “Confident” has consistently spoken out against body shaming. In a 2016 interview with Glamour, she explained that when someone calls her fat, even when she’s feeling insecure, she just laughs it off. She reasons that she’s already doing her best, so there’s nothing more she can do. She also pointed out that she doesn’t have a six-pack, and honestly, she doesn’t even want one.

Following the actress’s decision to share a nude photo online, someone criticized her, writing in a now-deleted tweet that it was inappropriate for a woman in her 50s to post such content, suggesting she should be enjoying time with her grandchildren instead. The commenter lamented what they saw as a lack of grace in aging.
Halle quickly responded with a playful comment: “Did you know a shrimp’s heart is in its head?”

Singer Camila Cabello recently addressed online criticism in a message posted on Instagram. She explained she’d been avoiding social media to protect her feelings, but accidentally saw headlines about people criticizing her body. Initially, she felt insecure about the photos, worrying about cellulite and not looking ‘perfect.’ However, she quickly realized that everyone has bad angles and that expecting perfection is unrealistic, especially for young girls growing up in a world filled with heavily edited images. She wants her younger sister and other girls to understand that photoshopped pictures aren’t reality, and that constant exposure to them creates an impossible standard. Cabello emphasized that cellulite and natural bodies are beautiful and normal, and she refuses to participate in unrealistic beauty standards. She encouraged others to reject these standards as well.

In May 2019, the singer shared a video of her performance at the Hangout Music Festival, where she was wearing a black leotard. Someone commented on social media, questioning why she didn’t appear as curvy as she used to, referencing a previous collaboration with two male country artists. The singer responded directly, saying she had gained weight and asked people to accept it.
She criticized the fashion industry for allegedly refusing to provide her with dresses for the Grammys due to her size. In a January 2019 Instagram post, she urged the industry to promote body positivity, stating, “Empower women to love their bodies instead of making girls and women feel insecure about their size.” She emphasized that beauty comes in all sizes and proudly declared she would be attending the Grammys regardless, celebrating her size 8 figure with the hashtag #LOVEYOURBODY.

The celebrity had previously shared a photo of her family celebrating the Golden State Warriors’ win over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals. In the picture, she’s holding her son, Canon. Someone then commented, asking if she was pregnant again.
She said no way, laughing, and explained that her 30-pound son was making it hard to get good photos because he was so active.
I recently saw a really disheartening comment online about a child’s weight, someone actually questioned their health based on a number. Honestly, it was awful! I immediately responded, and I have to say, I just shut that negativity down. There’s absolutely no room for body shaming, especially when it comes to kids. It’s a firm ‘no’ from me, every time.

Only a week after giving birth, the podcast host used Instagram to connect with her fans.
Okay, seriously, I was SO upset I had to get this off my chest. I almost posted this picture of my stomach, wanting to be real about getting back to feeling healthy, but I’m SO glad I didn’t! I ended up cropping it. The comments on my last photo were just…wow, people can be so mean. I kept getting asked if I’d had a tummy tuck or a chef, like I just magically bounced back! No, I didn’t! And I definitely don’t have endless money to train every day. Yes, I had a C-section, and yes, it still hurts and I’m on medication, but I can handle pain pretty well. This was actually my third stomach surgery – I’ve had my appendix and gallbladder removed too. In that photo, I was actually wearing a belly wrap super tight, and high-waisted pants, and here I am, having to defend myself! Why?! If I’d posted the real picture, I bet I’d still be getting judged, even though I just wanted to share my journey. Honestly, why do we women always compare ourselves and then tear each other down? I tell myself this all the time…why can’t we just accept that we’re all different? Our bodies are all made uniquely, they heal differently, they look different, and that’s okay! Why do we need to shame someone for not fitting a certain mold, or feel bad about ourselves for not looking a certain way? Can we just be kinder to ourselves and remember that every woman’s journey is different, but we’re all beautiful? Can we lift each other up instead of tearing ourselves down with comparisons? Let’s try that…I love you all. Okay, back to my baby!

In April 2018, actress Candace Cameron Bure posted a photo of herself having dinner with her son, Lev Bure. Someone commented negatively, questioning why she still appeared heavier than her husband despite her workouts and asking if she’d changed her eating habits.
The actress quickly responded to the negative comment. She wrote, “If a 25-inch waist seems large to you, it’s because you’re viewing it with unrealistic expectations. Take care.”
