Groundbreaking 44-Year-Old Sci-Fi Franchise’s Newest Movie Is Now Streaming On Disney+

Science fiction movie series are incredibly popular in Hollywood. Studios keep reviving well-known and influential franchises like Blade Runner, Star Wars, Star Trek, Dune, and Avatar, continuing to release new films in these universes.

Studios and streaming services are all eager to create more science fiction content, whether by building on established franchises or turning them into large, interconnected universes with spin-offs and prequels. Disney has had success with this approach, recently bringing back popular series like Alien, Predator, and Planet of the Apes. Now, another one of their revived sci-fi franchises has a new installment available.

The Third Tron Movie, Tron: Ares, Is Now Streaming On Disney+

Disney revived the Tron series with Tron: Ares, which premiered in theaters in October 2025. Now, as of January 7, 2026, the movie is available for all Disney+ subscribers to stream.

The Tron series began in 1982 with the release of the first film starring Jeff Bridges. While not a blockbuster, the movie did well in theaters and is remembered for its innovative use of computer animation and groundbreaking visual effects.

Tron: Ares is the latest installment in the Tron series, arriving 15 years after Tron: Legacy. Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn, but the story centers on Eve Kim (Greta Lee) who is looking for a missing part of Flynn’s code. Her search leads her to Ares (Jared Leto), a program created by Dellinger. The film revisits the digital world of the Grid, but also shows programs venturing into the real world.

Joachim Rønning’s Tron: Ares received a mixed reaction when it first came out in cinemas. Like previous films in the series, its strongest point is its stunning visual effects. While the movie benefits from modern 2025 technology, it also cleverly brings the iconic look of the original 1982 Tron Grid to life in one memorable scene.

The movie’s action sequences and soundtrack by Nine Inch Nails are generally well done. While the story and characters might not appeal to everyone, fans of the original Tron will likely enjoy it.

With Tron: Ares now available on streaming, it has a chance to reach more viewers than it did in theaters. The film was a significant disappointment for Disney at the box office, expected to result in a loss of over $132 million after earning only $142 million worldwide. While Disney+ won’t make up for those losses, this new installment in the Tron series could find a wider audience on the streaming service.

While Tron: Ares might not be as groundbreaking as the first Tron film, or as popular as Tron: Legacy, it’s now available for those who didn’t get a chance to see it in cinemas.
