The next Grand Theft Auto 6 is easily one of the most eagerly awaited games ever, and with good reason. The first and second trailers look fantastic, and they introduce the setting for the first new GTA game in 13 years, scheduled for release in 2026 – unless the release date is pushed back again, that is.
Many fans adored Rockstar’s last single-player game, Red Dead Redemption 2, and previous Grand Theft Auto titles have been favorites for players across many console generations.
But who is to say if GTA 6 will actually be any good?
So, it seems Dan Houser, the former head of Rockstar Games who departed in 2020 and isn’t currently working on the highly anticipated new game, is the person we’re talking about.
As a huge fan, I always knew Dan Houser was a big part of what made Grand Theft Auto so amazing, but it’s incredible to realize he’s been involved in almost every game! After he and his brother, Sam Jones, took the reins from the original creators, David Jones and Mike Dailly, it makes perfect sense that he’d have a *ton* of insight into everything Grand Theft Auto. He basically knows it inside and out!
Despite having a lot of experience and knowledge, Dan Houser revealed in an interview with IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey at LA Comic Con 2025 that he wasn’t involved in creating GTA 6. He clarified: “Each game tells a fresh story. It won’t feature a plot I wrote or characters I created, but I believe it will be very exciting. I’m confident the game will be excellent.“
McCaffery then wonders: “Will it feel strange if GTA is released on May 26th, 2026, and you haven’t already memorized every detail of the game? Will you feel like you haven’t absorbed every square inch of it before even getting a chance to play?”
Following a hesitant “Um”, Houser conceded it would be unusual. He then expressed that “it’s a great privilege to have worked on something that big”, noting he had written “the last ten or eleven [Grand Theft Auto’s]” and felt the “world’s probably had enough GTA” from him.
Whether or not that holds true remains to be seen, of course.
We’ll have to wait a while for GTA 6 to come out, but it’s almost certain to be a huge success and earn back the money spent on making it. Even if the story isn’t the strongest in the series, the game will likely be popular simply because of the fun, chaotic things players can do – like causing trouble and leading police on chases.
A strong sense of nostalgia will likely be a key part of the experience, as the game revisits Vice City. This iconic location hasn’t appeared in a new Grand Theft Auto game since 2006’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.
I’m really hoping we see some familiar faces from the original Vice City pop up in GTA 6, alongside all the new characters like the protagonists, Jason and Lucia. It would be awesome to revisit some old favorites with the new storyline!
Even if you don’t care about much else, just driving around the state of Leonida, noticing how much better the graphics are in GTA 6 compared to GTA 5, and listening to the GTA 6 soundtrack on the car radio – or even while exploring on foot with headphones – will likely be worth the cost of the game on its own.
The next version of GTA Online is also in development. It has been incredibly successful for Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive. Reports suggest it might support up to 100 players simultaneously, but could also need players in the UK to verify their age to comply with the Online Safety Act.
If you’re unable to get your hands on GTA 6 when it releases, you might be able to pass the time by endlessly scrolling through a companion app that’s reportedly being developed. It would be a way to stay connected to the game even if you can’t play it right away.
