GTA 6’s Cost Officially Confirmed in New Documents From Rockstar

Recently released internal documents from Rockstar North show the total cost of developing the game before it launched.

A recent post on Twitter from the fan account Grand Theft Auto 6 Alerts revealed internal documents from Rockstar North detailing the costs of developing the next Grand Theft Auto game. These documents show that Rockstar North has spent over $2.1 billion on employee salaries and wages since 2019.

Grand Theft Auto 6’s Cost Has Been Massive

The estimated $2.1 billion cost of GTA VI is substantial, but it’s important to understand that this doesn’t include all of Rockstar’s operating expenses or just the salaries related to the GTA series. However, GTA VI is by far Rockstar’s largest project, so the majority of that $2.1 billion is directly connected to its development.

Current predictions suggest that developing and producing Grand Theft Auto VI will cost more than $3 billion by the time it’s released later this year.

People have been eagerly anticipating the release of Grand Theft Auto VI for years, but its development has faced numerous problems and delays. The latest announcement, made in November 2025, pushed the release date back again.

Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive still face several challenges before releasing Grand Theft Auto VI, and these could delay getting the game to players. A new law went into effect on March 16th requiring online shoppers to prove their age and identity before buying or accessing adult content or using certain chatbots.

Popular games like Grand Theft Auto VI could cause significant issues for Australian gamers due to new regulations. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner states these rules will apply broadly across the internet, and violations could lead to extremely high penalties – up to AU$49.5 million per instance. This is a much larger financial risk than typical fines, even for those who don’t usually worry about legal consequences.

Grand Theft Auto VI is currently slated for release on November 19.
