Apple TV’s new horror series receives the ultimate praise from Guillermo del Toro.
Guillermo del Toro is a filmmaker known for his work in horror, fantasy, and science fiction. He’s created memorable movies like Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, Frankenstein, Cronos, Mimic, Hellboy, Crimson Peak, Pinocchio, Pacific Rim, and Blade II. This same imaginative style extends to his television projects, including Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and The Strain. Del Toro’s talent has been widely celebrated, with The Shape of Water winning Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio earning the award for Best Animated Feature Film.
Guillermo del Toro recently praised Apple TV+’s new horror-comedy series, Widow’s Bay. The first season follows Mayor Tom Loftis (played by Matthew Rhys) as he tries to revitalize a New England town by attracting tourists. The town’s residents, however, believe the island is haunted, and a series of strange, supernatural events start to make Tom wonder if they’re right.
Guillermo del Toro shared a glowing review of the series Widow’s Bay on X (formerly Twitter). He called it potentially “the best streaming series in a long time” and praised its storytelling as “one of the most mesmerizing acts of narrative prestidigitation in Horror.”
The show has been widely praised, earning a 97% “Certified Fresh” rating from critics and a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. In a review for ScreenRant, Angel Shaw gave the series nine out of ten stars, highlighting its skillful blend of suspense and comedy, and drawing positive comparisons to the show Severance.
Guillermo del Toro describes a clever trick in Widow’s Bay: the story smoothly shifts between frightening moments and everyday life, leaving characters (and the audience) wondering if the scary things that happened were actually real. This skillful blend of suspense and humor is key to the story’s effect.
Tom, along with his assistant Patricia (Kate O’Flynn) and long-time resident Wyck (Stephen Root), try to uncover the truth behind the strange events happening in town as they become more frequent. Important characters also include Tom’s son, Evan Loftis (Kingston Rumi Southwick), Sheriff Bechir Clemmons (Kevin Carroll), Reverend Bryce (Toby Huss), and Rosemary (Dale Hickey), a talkative employee at the mayor’s office.
Beyond the positive reviews, Widow’s Bay is performing very well on streaming platforms. Currently, it’s the second most-watched show on Apple TV in the U.S. and third worldwide, only behind Your Friends & Neighbors. This success is based on the first seven episodes, with three more episodes still to be released.
The new series Widow’s Bay comes from Katie Dippold, known for her work on Parks and Recreation. Hiro Murai directs several episodes and also serves as an executive producer alongside Dippold. Murai’s previous work includes acclaimed shows like Atlanta, Legion, Snowfall, Barry, Station Eleven, The Bear, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Widow’s Bay is now streaming on Apple TV.
