Ahead of the release of Avatar 3, director James Cameron received high praise from a close friend and fellow filmmaker, Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro, who is currently promoting his new horror film Frankenstein, shared in an interview that he’s seen Avatar: Fire and Ash and believes it’s as impressive as the previous Avatar movies – a true masterpiece.
Guillermo del Toro says Avatar: Fire and Ash will surprise many people
Guillermo del Toro recently discussed his close friendship with James Cameron while speaking to the Konbini Vidéo Club, and also gave his thoughts on the next Avatar movie, Avatar 3.
The artist, 61, said he’d been fascinated with the idea for a long time. ‘He was even discussing Avatar back in the 1990s,’ she noted.
He shared what viewers can anticipate in the third installment of Cameron’s popular Avatar series, calling the three films he’s seen “absolute masterpieces.” He revealed he knows the story’s direction and believes it will be surprising for audiences. While he couldn’t discuss specifics about the third film, he emphasized that very few creators have built such a complete and expansive fictional world – comparing Jim Cameron to George Lucas (Star Wars) and Frank Baum (The Wizard of Oz), and suggesting Avatar is destined to join their ranks, taking audiences on an incredible journey.
Guillermo del Toro’s recent comments echo his praise for the 2022 film Avatar: The Way of Water. Shortly after its release, del Toro used his X (formerly Twitter) account to applaud director James Cameron, calling the film a “staggering achievement” filled with beautiful scenery and powerful emotions on a grand scale, and stating Cameron was “at the peak of his powers.”
Avatar 3, titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, is scheduled to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.
