Guillermo del Toro is a truly unique filmmaker, and many believe there will never be another like him. He’s famous for bringing empathy and emotion to fantastical creatures, while also showing that real monsters often look like ordinary people. From epic monster battles to atmospheric gothic love stories, del Toro has a distinctive storytelling style, and now fans have easier access to one of his lesser-known but excellent films.
Hulu recently added Guillermo del Toro’s *Nightmare Alley* back to its streaming service, letting subscribers enjoy this exciting film. It’s a great time for the return, as del Toro has another new movie coming out soon.
Guillermo del Toro’s latest film, *Nightmare Alley*, is currently available on Hulu. His take on *Frankenstein*, a story he’s long admired, will be in select theaters this Friday before becoming a Netflix original movie on November 7th.
What to Watch Before Frankenstein
As a critic, I’ve been thinking about Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming *Frankenstein*, and I realized how crucial a re-watch of *Nightmare Alley* feels right now. Both films share a really unsettling darkness, and *Nightmare Alley* especially explores the idea of a ‘monster’ being made before our very eyes. I suspect we’ll see a lot of parallels between Bradley Cooper’s character, Stanton Carlisle – a con man who tries to manipulate everything around him and ultimately pays the price – and Oscar Isaac’s take on Victor Frankenstein. It’s a classic cautionary tale, and I’m anticipating some strong thematic connections between the two films.
If you’re looking for other Guillermo del Toro movies to watch before his new Frankenstein film, you have plenty of good options! However, some feel more similar in style to the upcoming movie than others. Based on the trailer, *Crimson Peak* seems like the closest match. This 2015 gothic romance and haunted house story has gained a lot of fans over time and is currently streaming on Prime Video, but it will be removed at the end of October, so don’t wait too long to watch it!
