What’s exciting about Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is that it reintroduces aspects and figures from the initial Mobile Suit Gundam cartoon in fresh ways. In this series, Gundam GQuuuuuuX takes place in an alternate timeline where the villains emerged victorious, and Amuro Ray, the principal character of the original series, never materialized. It’s the emergence of Challia Bull in Gundam GQuuuuuuX, a minor antagonist who previously clashed with Amuro, that becomes significant here. Although he was quite memorable in the classic anime, by 2025, his relevance had diminished significantly.

In the Gundam GQuuuuuuX series, the character Challia was given a significant role. At Anime Expo in Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, the show’s team, including Shinji Kawada, Challia’s voice actor, spoke on stage about various aspects of the show. They specifically talked about how Challia gained popularity within the series. The crew casually mentioned the character’s Green Man nickname, a term used by fans online to describe his green outfit and turquoise-like hair. In addition, they provided insights into other characters as well.

What Made Challia Great in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX

The Gundam Rising Event at Anime Expo was an amazing spectacle filled with engaging cast interviews, lively performances, and tantalizing insights into the series. Despite initial impressions that it might be a one-hit wonder, the team behind the show has shared some intriguing details about its characters, particularly focusing on the main characters. Attendees were treated to the presence of series director Kazuya Tsurumaki, scriptwriter Yoji Enokido, executive producer Naohiro Ogata, and voice actors Tomoyo Kurosawa, Shimba Tsuchiya, Shinji Kawada, and Yuuki Shin.

The team deliberated over Challia’s part in the production, revealing that her character embodies unity between the youthful and mature generations. They talked about how the younger group, full of ambition and vigor, sometimes clash with the older generation due to their more traditional ways. However, the elders possess valuable experience. It’s crucial to foster a connection between the generations, and Challia serves as a symbol of this collaboration between the past and future. In stark contrast, Challia is a tactical thinker, making them an excellent team. Eventually, they become the main characters, successfully thwarting Kycilia Zabi’s plot, rescuing Lalah Sune, and placing Artesia on the throne.

In my observation, Kawada admits to being taken aback by how distinctively quirky Challia appeared in the anime compared to his written persona. His eccentricities, such as his casual disregard for rules, lack of seriousness, and unique line deliveries, were more pronounced in the animated version. Although his bond with Char and his revamped design weren’t extensively discussed during the Gundam Rising Event, they too contributed to Challia’s endearing appeal among fans. Despite never attaining the iconic status of Char Aznable, Challia has found a special place in the hearts of fans as the lovable, middle-aged Green Man in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.
