In the series titled “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX“, there are numerous appearances of characters from the initial “Mobile Suit Gundam” anime. Notably, characters like Char Aznable, Challia Bull, Kycilia Zabi, and Lalah Sune play significant roles in this spin-off. However, it’s worth noting that the series reserves its most surprising cameo for its finale. Althoughout the show, Artesia, who is revealed to be Char’s sister, makes intermittent appearances. Fans of Gundam would recognize Artesia as Sayla Mass, a name she used while serving under the Earth Federation army. In the original anime, Sayla ranks just below Amuro Ray and Char in terms of importance. Her appearances in “Gundam GQuuuuuuX” are usually fleeting, often requiring a keen eye to catch them, and her facial features are often concealed.
Thankfully, the final episode of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX revealed Sayla’s captivating visage during its closing montage. As Artesia, she rose to lead Zeon following the demise of the Zabi family. Clad in traditional regalia and a crown, she ascended the old Side 3 mansion’s steps. Ramba Ral, another iconic Gundam character, wasn’t far behind, making a sudden entrance at the last moment, too. Artesia was able to seize the leadership role because her father had previously established and named the Principality of Zeon before Zabi took over and instituted their radical ideologies.
What Was Sayla’s Role in Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX?
In an alternate universe of the classic Gundam anime, the story unfolds as Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Initially introduced in the film, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, Sayla took over Amuro’s position as the Earth Federation’s elite mobile suit pilot, despite not having a Gundam. Her brother was her primary adversary on Solom, an asteroid acting as their operational base. After facing off against him, she retreated. The same dramatic scene from this movie would later be adapted in Episode 8 of the animated series. In the final episode, two significant flashbacks featuring Sayla were included – one reenacted from the original anime and another depicting her and Char’s childhood memories together.
It was discovered that Challia Bull, who appeared to be an ally of Char, had in fact been loyal to his sister all along. After being reunited with Char, Challia came to understand that he posed a threat to the future and attempted to eliminate him. The dialogue suggests that Challia had collaborated with Artesia secretly throughout this time. Eventually, Char chose to separate from Challia and retreat into solitude. In the final moments of the series, Char met Lalah for the first time in the Gundam GQuuuuuuX universe. Although Challia was prepared to serve prison time for his involvement in the Zabi family’s murder, Xavier persuaded him to remain at liberty and work toward building a better future. The final scene shows Challia observing Artesia and Ramba from afar while wearing a lively mask inspired by Char.
What Did Sayla Do in The Original Gundam Universe?
In the classic Gundam universe, following our father’s demise, I, known as Artesia to the world, and my brother Char, originally Casval, chose different paths. While I assumed the guise of Sayla, my brother joined forces with Zeon, intent on eliminating the Zabi family. I found myself joining the White Base crew, a group that called the mighty RX-78-2 Gundam their own. Unbeknownst to many, I harbored dormant Newtype abilities, which made me the only suitable candidate aside from Amuro to pilot the Gundam when he was unable. During the One-Year War, I piloted various auxiliary mobile suits and vehicles, supporting the Gundam and the White Base crew in their battles. Miraculously, I managed to survive that conflict. From then on, my presence in the Gundam narrative seemed to fade, even during Char’s counteroffensive against Earth in ‘Char’s Counterattack’.
In a twist of fate, I made a brief appearance in the iconic anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, but it wasn’t until 2015, in the captivating reimagining titled Gundam: Origin, that my character truly took center stage. For years, fans have pondered over the reasons behind my absence from the original storyline. It turned out that the talented Japanese voice actress, Yo Inoue, was unavailable during the production of the early series. Interestingly enough, Gundam: Origin delves into an alternate reality of the original Gundam anime, but this time, the alterations are minimal. This captivating spin-off serves as a refreshing retelling of the original story, with additional details and backstory that don’t align perfectly with the Universal Century timeline. The anime adaptation primarily focuses on the origin stories of Char and Sayla, while the manga version brings the entire series to life. Strangely enough, my character, Sayla, assumes a pivotal role in the revival of the old Zeon ideology when her true identity as Artesia is unveiled in Gundam: Origin, a development that never occurred in the classic series.
