As a huge Gundam fan, I’m so excited to see the franchise potentially break into live-action! Gundam has stayed popular for so long by constantly reinventing itself with new anime series set in different timelines, but live-action has always been the missing piece. Now, Legendary Pictures and Bandai Namco are finally making a North American live-action Gundam movie, and they’ve cast Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo! The slightly disappointing news? It sounds like instead of a big theatrical release, the movie is headed to a streaming platform, which might not be what fans were hoping for.
Deadline reports that the upcoming live-action Gundam movie will stream on Netflix. This fits with Netflix’s strategy of adapting popular anime and manga into live-action series and films, like they’ve done with One Piece, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Yu Yu Hakusho. It’s still unclear if the movie will skip theaters completely. Netflix has occasionally released its original films in cinemas, such as Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein and Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man, so fans are hoping the same will happen with this exciting Gundam adaptation.
The Live-Action Gundam Movie: What Will It Be?
What this new Gundam movie will be about is still unknown, leaving fans to speculate if it will revisit the classic Universal Century story or venture into completely new areas. Since its debut in the late 1970s, the Mobile Suit franchise has told many different stories, including those in Gundam Wing, G Gundam, and others. This flexibility is a key reason the franchise has become so popular, with hundreds of millions of model kits sold worldwide.
For a long time, many people doubted live-action anime would ever succeed. Previous attempts like the films based on Dragon Ball, Ghost in the Shell, and Fist of the North Star disappointed fans by not capturing the spirit of the original stories. However, that’s changing now, largely thanks to the recent success of the One Piece adaptation on Netflix. The creator of One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, was heavily involved, and it seems to have broken a long-standing curse. Now, we’re seeing more live-action anime projects in development, including adaptations of My Hero Academia, One-Punch Man, and Naruto.
The new live-action Gundam movie is just one of several coming soon. Later this year, “Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe” will be released in theaters, continuing the story from the previous film, “Hathaway’s Flash.” Although it’s animated and not live-action, this movie is highly anticipated by fans and will add to the established Gundam universe.
